You can own a gun if you live in a city, you just have to have what is considered a "genuine reason" to own a gun, that being:

A) For hunting
B) Pest Control
C) You do target shooting
D) You are a member of a shooting club
E) You are a collector (must be deactivated)
F) If you are in QUEEEEENSLAAAAAAND you can own any muzzleloader or cap and ball gun, pistols must be registered (based Queensland)
G) You can also own cartridge guns without licence or registration which are were made before 1901 and who's ammunition is not commercially available (in Queensland).

The laws are not nearly as strict as people (Yanks) make them out to be, there are 3 or 4 guns shops near me and 4 or so shooting ranges as well.

However, the WA government is planning on passing the most braindead legislations on the planet soon.
The guy attempting to pass them, Paul Papalia, claimed you could make functioning guns from gell blasters, he said this in a bid to get them banned, he succeeded. Absolute fucking Moron.

fun fact: aussies don't have the 2nd amendment and cannot legally use firearms in populated areas
