Historical info:

BTR-70 have its roots in GAZ-50 project - an attempt of GAZ (Gorky automobile factory) to create a cheaper, wheeled alternative to BMP-1 using BTR-60 chassis.
While project and trials was successful, military didn't see a need to adopt it.
But at the same time military was not exactly satisfied with BTR-60 performance - that's why they suggesteed to put a turret from it on GAZ-50 (with a few minor changes to the hull). The vehicle end up being adopted as BTR-70, which essentially was a BTR-60 chassis and armament with a new hull and engines.

The vehicle saw extensive use during Afghanistan war by soviet army, which showed several issues with the BTR-70. Some of those were fixed in years of production, but main one - two synced gasoline engines - was fixed only with the introduction of BTR-80.

BTR-70 was also adopted by different Warsaw Pact countries, such as DDR, Romania and Hungary.
Romania even started a license production under the name of TAB-77 and made several own vehicles based on it.

After the USSR fall, many ex-soviet countries kept the BTR-70 in their inventory, but the main user was the Ukraine. It didn't take long for them to see action again - ukrainian peacekeepers was sent to ex-Yugoslavia as part of UN mission and was equipped with mid/late production variants of BTR-70.

BTR-70 is still being used actively around the world and despite it being over 50 years old - it still gets the job done (especially if the vehicle is well maintained and saw some modernisation).
