Improved Heavy Fighters

Description
Improved Heavy Fighters

Ever since the Air Designer was introduced, Heavy Fighters have seemingly been relegated to the trash bin. They use the Medium Airframe which is much heavier and slower and less agile than the Small Airframe (for light fighters). Heavy fighters in WWII were nowhere near the size of tactical bombers (some came close: e.g. P-61 Black Widow).

This mod fixes that! You will still use the Medium Airframe to create heavy fighters (because of how Paradox set up distinctions between types of aircraft, I cannot add it to the Small Airframe. I have a work-around in mind, but it would be much more expansive than this mod), but you get a bonus when selecting Fighter Weapons in the first slot:

*Increased Agility
*Increased Speed
*Decreased Weight

You will notice that, now, your heavy fighters have A) longer range than your light fighters, B) only a bit less speed than light fighters C) only a bit less agility than light fighters.

(Paradox does not use agility simply for the maneuverability of the aircraft. It represents other things like climb rate, service ceiling, etc. - in other words, many things that affect the ability of the aircraft to take an advantageous position and get out of a scrape.).

This mod has not been tested for balance. One issue I foresee: you can create a single-engine Heavy Fighter with similar stats to Light Fighter but you get the 1.25 Air Superiority bonus instead of only 1.0. Let me know if you think this (or anything else) are issues, and I'll attempt to address them.

Enjoy!

Compatibility

This mod should not interfere with any mod that does not change x_plane_airframes.txt, plane_airframes.txt, or 00_plane_modules.txt files.

*This mod requires the By Blood Alone DLC

The combined mod isn't compatible with many other mods because they alter the same files.

Please use the combined mod link above for an updated version. Thank you.

Sorry - just now saw this comment. The mods have been combined. See link in the description.

Can you combine Improved Heavy Fighters and Medium Naval Bombers into one small mod? Not a big overhaul mod like Improved Air Designer.
Colonel O'Neil  [author] 28 Feb, 2024 @ 7:45pm
No, unfortunately not. However, I did incorporate both mods into my "Improved Air Designer" mod now up on Steam.

Compatible with your other mod Medium Naval Bombers?

Go to Steam directory for this mod (Steam\steamapps\workshop\content\394360\3049456199) and go to common\units\equipment and open the "plane_airframes" file (should open in Notepad or some text editor). Do a [Ctrl][F] to look for "cv_small_plane_airframe". You should see something like this:

cv_small_plane_airframe = {
year = 1933

Scroll until you see

module_count_limit = {
module = floats #can't put floats on carrier planes, that would be silly
count < 1
}

Change the '1' to a '2'. Save. Voi la! Floats on CV planes!
