Like my mods? [coff.ee]

  • Adds seven new companies for the Netherlands
  • Gives the Netherlands the Nederlandsche Handel-Maatschappij as starting company
  • Adds one prestige good, and adds a nicer icon for another: Heineken Beer and Philips 932A Radios, respectively
  • Adds executives: one for the NHM, several for Heineken, Philips and Jurgens
  • Contains high-quality, handmade logos and icons

Playable without DLC
No DLC needed! This mod adds prestige goods and extra industries in which companies can invest. Without the DLC Charters of Commerce, these features also aren’t available in this mod. I’ve also tested my mod without DLC, though, and all other additions I’ve made here work as they should (and, if not, please do tell).

New Dutch companies
This mod adds no less than seven new Dutch companies, with (in my opinion) high-quality custom-made digitalisations of advertisements, logos or other forms of corporate communication, to serve as icons for those companies. I also designed new icons for the Netherlands’ two vanilla companies.

New additions to this latest version are that the Netherlands now start out having a company enabled, namely the Nederlandsche Handel-Maatschappij (Netherlands Trading Society). This is a company that can build and acquire ports, but it can also (with DLC enabled), invest in all kinds of plantations, like cotton plantations (important as the NHM played a big role in stimulating the production of clothing in the Netherlands, in regions like Twente and Brabant).

I chose ports and not trade centres as primary industry for the NHM, as the NHM was focused primarily on fostering trade between the Netherlands and the Dutch East Indies - thus internal trade/merchant marine/convoys in the game. These are built in ports, and used by trade centres for international trade. Though, you can use the trade rights charter to give the NHM permission to buy and build trade centres anyway (also without DLC).

New characters and prestige goods
I’ve also added several characters. The NHM begins with Hendrik Christiaan van der Houven as director. The family companies Heineken, Philips and Jurgens have entire dynasties, so you don’t all of the sudden have some random guy as the boss of Heineken, but someone with the family name (or Lady Maria Tindal, the widow of Gerard Adriaan Heineken, who led the company for some time after his death).

The new prestige goods are Heineken Beer (variant of liquor) and Philips 932A Radios (variant of radios). Heineken because it won prizes during the time period of the game, and the Philips radio because I think it looks pretty (maybe not the best reason, but Philips is of course an iconic Dutch company in any case, and light bulbs aren’t in the game). The radios have, not unlikely due to this mod, now been added to the base game. This mod however still adds my (in my opinion nicer) icon.

I’ve removed two companies that used to be part of this mod, Douwe Egberts and Van Nelle, as these companies can’t be founded in the Netherlands, only in the Dutch East Indies. The Nederlandsche Handel-Maatschappij is a company founded in the Netherlands that can also invest in plantations in the East Indies.

Included companies are:

Nederlandsche Handel-Maatschappij (Netherlands Trading Society)
- Primary industries: ports
- Secondary industries: cotton plantations, sugar plantations, coffee plantations, tobacco plantations
- Icon: het in brons gegoten zegel van de NHM dat te zien is op het voormalige gebouw in Rotterdam aan de West-Blaak, als zegel gedrukt op papier

Heineken’s Bierbrouwerij Maatschappij
- Primary industries: food industries
- Secondary industries: wheat farms
- Icon: Heineken lable
- Prestige good: Heineken Beer (Liquor)

Philips:
- Icon: poster with Philips lamps
- Prestige good: Philips 932A Radios (Radios)

Etablissement Fijenoord
- Primary industries: motor industries, shipyards
- Secondary industries: tooling workshops, military shipyards
- Icon: ship’s telegraph

Nederlandsche Fabriek van Werktuigen en Spoorwegmaterieel (Werkspoor)
- Primary industries: motor industries
- Secondary industries: tooling workshops
- Icon: plate attached to a machine

Hollandsche IJzeren Spoorwegmaatschappij
- Primary industries: railway
- Secondary industries: motor industries
- Icon: medal celebrating 75 years of existence

Staatsmijnen in Limburg
- Primary industries: coal mines
- Secondary industries: railway
- Icon: medal celebrating 25 years of existence

Firma Antoon Jurgens
- Primary industries: food industries
- Secondary industries: livestock ranches
- Icon: packaging of Jurgens’ Solo-Margarine

Nederlandse Petroleum Maatschappij
- Now called ‘Bataafsche Petroleummaatschappij’ (with correct pre-war spelling)
- Icon: seal with the full name in 1890: Koninklijke Nederlandsche Maatschappij tot Exploitatie van Petroleumbronnen in Nederlandsch-Indië

The United East India Company (which I think you’re hinting at) went bankrupt and was relinquished in the late 1700’s. The Dutch state took over its East Indies possessions.

The Nederlandsche Handel-Maatschappy , which is included, is regarded as a sort of successor to the VOC, apparently being nicknamed ‘Kompenie Ketjil’ (small[er]/lesser company, as in, the smaller version of the VOC) in Malay.

But the East Indies were formally simply part of the Netherlands at this point.

In this new update I’ve added the aforementioned text icons, and characters for Philips.

I previously also improved the non-Latin alphabet localisations, for which I’ve used a mix of DeepL, Google Translate, ChatGPT and Wikipedia. I can’t vouch for their accuracy, as of these scripts I can only read Cyrillic with some proficiency, and only a tiny little bit of Hangul. I have tried to go for Dutch pronunciations, though (Google Translate seems to default a lot to English pronunciations, eg. ‘David’ in Russian Cyrillic becomes ‘Дэйвид’, where according to Dutch pronunciation it’d be ‘Давид’).

I also only just noticed the new prestige goods are supposed to have defined text icons. Eg. in the picture the yellow ‘Heineken Beer’ text is supposed to have the Heineken bottle to the left of it.

I hope I can add this in a gui file which doesn’t have to override the other text icons, for maximal compatibility. Testing it now.

Hmm. I suppose they have. Thanks for telling me.

I’m a bit miffed over the time I spent making that icon, but at least I think mine still looks nicer :p

Hey, fyi Paradox have added the Phillips Chapel radio in the 1.9.6 public beta.

I just noticed I completely forgot Philips (obviously) is a family business as well. I’ll be adding characters for Philips as well.

I’ve made a slight change to the Staatsmijnen in Limburg (State Mines in Limburg) so that they can only be founded, either if you’re playing as the Netherlands and Gelre (South-Eastern Netherlands) isn’t a split state, or you’re playing as the Duchy of Limburg or Belgium and own (part of) Gelre (South-Eastern Netherlands).

This is a (though imperfect) way to ensure the Netherlands can’t found the State Mines in Limburg without actually owning (the modern Dutch part of) Limburg, and to now also allow Belgium and even Limburg itself (if you like playing single split-state subjects) to found it as a company.
