The Great Bear Island Trans-Island Railway Line

Description
A standard-gauge D27M-3 of Great Bear Island's Trans-Island Railway Line, one of three identical examples of this hardy diesel-mechanical shunter that operated along the line. The three-axle design, unusual for standard-gauge D27Ms, was well-suited for the Trans-Island Line due to the varying quality and stability of the line's track. These locomotives primarily served at the yards at Port MacKinley, the Langston Mine, and occasionally the Last Resort Cannery. They were generally reliable even in harsh conditions, though the spartan cabs offered little insulation and were rather uncomfortable in the winter.

After the mine and cannery shut down, a single D27M-3 remained in active service in and around the port, with the other two serving as spare parts sources. This sole surviving unit occasionally made ventures farther along the line up to and immediately after the Collapse, but eventually derailed and broke down for good somewhere along the much-degraded Far Range Branch Line between the maintenance yard and Transfer Pass while attempting to retrieve a pair of boxcars from the abandoned mine. A road-rail utility truck was dispatched from the maintenance yard to retrieve the train's crew of two, and the ruined diesel-mechanical shunter was abandoned where it came to rest in a snowdrift. It likely still remains there to this day, though its exact location is impossible to determine as it has long since vanished under the snow.

Recommended to operate on Rinston's Great Bear Island Railway layout.
