I'm currently in the process of writing three different guides (Gatling Gun Wizard, Cold Sorcerer Support and Frost Druid). We'll see what comes next :)
I'm on my 4th attempt at a Gith, OH Monk build that I want to dip into Fighter later for heavy armor and CON proficiency.
Shields of Thralls does sound pretty good for the early game indeed. Plus it's not like parasites too rare to justify getting that power.
LotFR is also very good, although personally getting prompted by it constantly annoys the sh*t out of me lmao. You should try Shield of Thralls out, though: It gives 10 temp hp and can stun enemies when it breaks. It's especially good early game when your character is super squishy and even the most feeble enemies can hit you for 7-12 damage a round.
I agree about the initiative items and the Alert feat, but it takes awhile to get those. As you said, the early game is where you're most likely to die.
As for when to take the Alert feat, I think it's usually really good on the MC, bc they tend to get a lot of the perma buffs and good equipment, so you can afford to pass up on an ASI or whatever else at lvl 8. That way they can equip Viconia's, the Adamantine Shield, etc., or equip the Darkfire Shortbow, Deadshot, etc.
I agree with the passive exp. Personally I just can't be bothered, but it's sound advice imho.
Some more thoughts:
- DEX isn't necessarily mandatory for good init rolls. You can have stuff like Sentinel Shield, Bow of Awareness or Hellrider Longbow for better init. Alert is an excellent feat for that (though personally I struggle to give it room in most of my builds). And Gloves of DEX are a thing.
Usually I have 1 character, sometimes 2 with low init. But the higher the better, yes.
- I never used Shield of Thralls but the other 2 are really good. Luck of the Far Realms is also super good.
I would say that it's worth farming passive exp starting at lvl 3, because you can get like 4/5 of the exp you need to get to lvl 4 just by discovering things, interacting with things, and passing easy checks. Either be a drow or have someone shapeshift into a drow to get past every Goblin camp check; they give extra exp. Then you can run around mopping up enemies to grind up to lvl 5.
A few things I thought of:
- Make sure your DEX is high enough to consistently get good initiative rolls (i.e., 16) bc this helps a ton, even in surprise rounds.
- Get your illithid powers up as soon as possible bc the early ones are really good, such as Favorable Beginnings, Shield of Thralls, and Cull the Weak.
- Get Dammon or Derryth's opinion up to 100 for future trading; they're available in every act.
- Trade for smokepowder bombs and elemental arrows; they're life-saving.
- Get Volo in your camp as soon as possible so you can rob him blind
