The Avenger-class cruiser is a step between the RWI Navy workhorse Defender-class Frigates, and the Daedalus-class Battle cruisers.

Where a Defender would be outmatched alone, and a Daedalus outrun, the Avenger bridges the gap in versatility, whilst keeping speed and fire power, in order to supplement the existing classes, that would otherwise be suited elsewhere.

The decision to use a Bridge module salvaged from a partially destroyed Defender was so that it would immediately be familiar to the surviving crew transferring to their successor ship. The inclusion of a CIC was to mirror their use on the battle-cruisers, which gives a safe-haven should the main bridge be inaccessible.
