X2 is a Swedish high-speed tilting train developed in collaboration between Kalmar Verkstad, Asea and the Swedish State Railways. The first trains were put into service in September 1990. The cars are designed to tilt into curves, allowing them to navigate through bends at higher speeds compared to standard trains. From the start, X2 was mainly intended for business travelers and the first trains consisted mostly of first class cars. A normal train set consisted of a power unit, four intermediate cars and a control car. In 1994, a shorter version, 'X2-2' was introduced for regional service. These trains only had two intermediate cars and were given a red stripe on the side instead of blue. During 1995, many first class cars were converted to second class to welcome all types of passengers. The trains were also made longer and a normal train set consisted of a drive unit, five intermediate cars and a control car.
In 2005, the trains were refurbished with new interior in gray and beige. On the outside, the trains received a new gray livery. The kiosk cars class UBS2 that ran in the shorter regional trains X2-2 were converted to bistro cars class URB2A. A normal train set now had four or five intermediate cars + power car and control car. From 2007, the ability to run two trains together was used more frequantly, and to make connection and disconnection easier, the original nose cones were replaced with simpler coupling covers. In 2009, these covers were replaced with a more sophisticated nose cone that could be folded up.
In 2014, the trains were equipped with a new, faster internet connection, and were relabelled with EVN (European Vehicle Number). The beige textiles inside were replaced with gray, similar to the chairs.
