Grunt Hill

Grunt Hill is a recreation of a Half-Life map created by fellow modder and otter, Fesiug . It was created over the course of a single day as I battled through yet more Hammer spaghetti. In a way, it is a spiritual successor to Weapon Depot, only with more swag.

Let me take you back to February 13th. I was dragged into a voice call with Fesiug where he showed me off a mod he made years ago. It was really fun actually, looking through the custom stuff he implemented. One map in particular stood out, and it was a map set on some hill completely taken over by grunts and a couple of assassins.

The level design was frankly a mess and playing it on hard difficulty was maddening yet extremely hilarious. In the voice call, I entertained the idea of remaking it in Garry's Mod with a fresh new look and Fesiug kept saying it is peak level design.

The remake became more enticing when I reminisced about Weapon Depot and how it is also a remake of a CS 1.6 map. I decided to take Grunt Hill in a similar direction, with Black Mesa textures and moody lighting. The only difference is that aesthetically it's quite different. It's set during night and the lighting resembles more closely to Black Mesa than its own thing.
