Description
***Works with Atuuk/Wekkarus DLC***

The Refreshed Troop Symbols mod replaces the vanilla symbols in order to give greater distinction, visibility and immersion to DW2.

<<< AI TRIGGER WARNING >>> Mod author is a dirty human sellout that uses generative AI to create aspects of mod content.

/========== IMPORTANT NOTE ==========\
DW2 requires a full-game restart after downloading and enabling a mod. So be sure you exit out of the game after turning the mod on, then re-launch DW2.

Also, the game doesn't seem to make use of its own Clone Troops symbol. This is a problem with vanilla. When DW2 starts to use its asset, this mod's version of that asset will automatically kick in.

/========== CHANGE LOG ==========\
  • v1.2.0 -- 01 May 2025 -- Replaced infantry icon. Added subtle outlining/shadowing to help with in-game visibiliy
  • v1.1.0 -- 30 December 2024 -- Removed hexagon outlines, enlarged and added drop shadow for better visibility
  • v1.0.0 -- 13 March 2024 -- Initial Release

/========== COMPATIBILITY ==========\
This mod does not edit any .xmls. It only swaps out vanilla art assets for troop symbols and ship symbols.

XL users: No conflicts. Just load XL last.

/========== CONTENTS ==========\
The game uses NATO-inspired symbols for its troops. This is fine (I'm a veteran myself and am familiar with them), however I don't find them very compelling, personally. Especially for more-rare troop types like Chimera Troops vs Synthetic Troops...I can struggle to remember the differences between the vanilla symbols.

This mod attempts to put some iconography in place. There's a soldier silhouette for infantry, tank for armor, mech for titans, etc. I did use symbols from Stellaris as inspiration for some of these. These new troop symbols are more for immersion and my personal tastes.

Enjoy!

/========== HOW TO USE THIS MOD ==========\
  1. Subscribe to the mod here in steam workshop.
  2. Launch DW2.
  3. Within the game, In the Modifications menu, enable the mod.
  4. <<< IMPORTANT >>> You must EXIT and RESTART Distant Worlds 2 before the mod will work.
  5. After re-loading DW2, start a new game and enjoy!

Updated to v1.2.0 ... mainly to get rid of the AK-47-ish infantry icon :D

Works fine with new DLC, no updates needed at this time. Still planning on tweaking some things, regardless :D

Great, the original symbol once made me think my game texture was lost

@Iron Dice -- thanks friend! Some of the troop types aren't used by the game yet...maybe it'll be something the DW2 activates in the future. These symbols will be ready for when that day comes :D

@Metalium -- I think so too! I know some folks like the NATO-inspired symbols and that's fine, but I like these more :D

Solid improvement. Thanks very much; excellent job on those.

@Bacon -- that's fair. they both are kinda low profile and pointy. Might take a look at an alternate version. Thank you!

I think the infantry vs armor symbols may be too similar at a glance since they have a similar shape. I personally stick to NATO counters; this is just something I noticed passing by.

@borealis -- thanks friend! I'm working with some community folks to find a way to split out troop symbols used in the UI with the graphics used in the battle screen. It might be possible to have separate graphics that show actual troops for use in battles. Could be fun, if only for the "pew pew" factor :D

If I get something like that going, I'll either expand this mod or link to a new mod.
