Weight Eraser Plus (b41, see desc. about b42)

Description
For anyone asking for a b42 update, unfortunately negative weight items are automatically turned into 0 weight items in b42, thus rendering this mod incompatible. Jan. 19, 2025
Hey! Is this mod not for you, but want something similar? I've recommended some mods by other authors in a pinned thread below for your convenience!*

What? Another cheaty weight mod?

That's right! While there are numerous weight mods on the workshop, many have allegedly ceased to function, don't work with modded items, don't play nicely with bags on the ground, or force you to equip a specific item for them to function.

This mod aims to keep the process of weight removal as simple and as compatible as possible. It only adds a singular item that you can easily make more of or remove at will.

How do I use this?

To get your first Weight Eraser, simply craft twigs or scrap wood into one. From there, two new recipes allow you to duplicate and delete Weight Erasers as you desire. Each Weight Eraser reduces weight by 100 and can be put in your inventory, in your storage containers, or even in your car's trunk/glovebox/seats to marginally increase the car's acceleration. Do note that you should NEVER reduce your car's weight into the negatives. Should you decide to add these to a vehicle, keeping your car's weight around the three to four hundred mark at minimum is ideal as any less than that will not substantially increase the acceleration of the vehicle.

Create Eraser: Cost: 1x Twigs OR 1x Scrap Wood Result: 1x Weight Eraser Split Eraser: Cost: 1x Weight Eraser Result: 2x Weight Eraser Combine Eraser: Cost: 2x Weight Eraser Result: 1x Weight Eraser

Compatibility

Should be compatible with every mod, as it adds an entirely new item... unless for whatever reason a different mod removes twigs and scrap wood from your game... but I have no idea why you would want that. Twigs and scrap wood were chosen as the base item as it is highly unlikely you will be unable to find them, even in modded maps. Any map that has doors, trees, or has foraging zones set up will have a way to get twigs and/or scrap wood... which should be every map.

Limitations

Not automatic. Adjusting your carryweight is manual. Currently no admin-only settings.† Too many items in one container causes a lot of lag, though this is true for all mods that cater to hoarders. I would recommend having separate, sorted containers around your base, or split up categories by adding items to your car seats if you are a nomadic player. Do NOT carry around 'literally everything' on your person unless you enjoy lag or have an extremely beefy computer.

Why use this mod over others?

There are plenty of mods that add a similar item to the game. In fact, in a pinned discussion I have recommend and linked the best of those mods that approach this issue in other ways.

All mods have limitations. Mine is probably not suited for a multiplayer server as there is nothing in the code to restrict it to only admins, for instance.† Below is a list of the limitations of the other mods I've found on the workshop, and why those limitations matter.

Modifies a vanilla item (typically an eraser or cash) to have negative weight.
The issue here is that not only do you have to find said item(s) in the world, they may also break vehicle physics (more detail below). While this is suited for a more 'balanced' weight reduction approach in case you want to have a progression to weight reduction, it is not very convenient for those who just want to hoard everything.

Reduces weight by way too much. Or too little.
One of the most popular weight reduction mods adds an eraser that reduces weight by -400. Unfortunately, vehicles tend to break when they are at negative weight, and erasers are a common spawn in vehicle gloveboxes. Specifically, when cars are at negative weight, they may clip into the floor. Your character may also start acting oddly when at high values of negative weight; many users have reported that sprinting becomes impossible or dies from "carrying too much". I assume at a certain point, negative values go into overflow, making the game think you should have the Heavy Load moodle while still allowing you to pick up items.

Other weight reduction mods attempt to solve this issue by making or modifying an item (typically cash or credit cards) reduce weight by 0.1 or 0.5, etc. This incentivizes the player to gather hundreds, if not thousands, of those items to reduce weight by a substantial amount. Unfortunately, this adds to inventory lag unnecessarily. The more items you have in one container, the more items the UI has to render, creating lag any time the container is highlighted. Naturally, weight reduction mods are already designed to allow players to carry more, compounding the issue.

Uses the context menu instead of a recipe to spawn the item.
All things considered, this is a rather minor issue... unless you already have a lot of mods that add more context menu options to your inventory or the ground. In my own game, right clicking in my inventory or on the ground can display a massive list of options and make it difficult to find the option I want. Twigs and scrap wood are extremely easy to find on any map (foraging, chopping down trees, breaking down doors) and very few mods add more recipes that require twigs and scrap wood.‡

Adds a backpack or container with a ridiculous capacity and 100% weight reduction.
The problem here is that when unequipped, backpacks and containers are considered to have their full weight. So, say you have a backpack that can carry 1000 kilos and weighs nothing when equipped. If you move it into your car or another container, or drop that backpack on the ground, the game considers it to be 1000 kilos instead of the 0 it would be on your back. This makes it impossible to put back into your inventory or re-equip it if your carry capacity is less than about 1020—and even modded most carry capacities end up being around the 30s or 40s. The only way to solve this issue typically involves having a second 100% weight reduction item equipped so that you can transfer the items one-by-one.

Additionally, this tends to restrict your cosmetic choices to whatever bag texture(s) that the mod affects, and may not even affect modded bags. While there is a fantastic mod that achieves this via lua code instead, allowing modded bags to work as well, it still has the issue inherent to all mods that increase container capacity.

There are other limitations, but these are the most common. Details about each recommended mods' limitations are listed in the pinned discussion.

Footnotes
*List last updated March 18th, 2024. Searched for other mods with the keyword "weight" and read descriptions and comments of all relevant mods up to the last page of results (22 pages). †Not really sure why this being usable by everyone is really a problem, as I'm pretty sure admins can use the Infinite CarryWeight debug option. Nevermind the fact that you typically don't want a mod like this on a server to begin with as any reckless player can lag out or crash the game by having too many items in one container. ‡At one point I considered making the recipe rely on ripped sheets as they are even easier to acquire (literally just kill any zombie wearing clothes and rip them), but there are tons of mods that add more recipes that require ripped sheets, further increasing context menu bloat on them.

Sorry for the late update, got sick right after the holidays.

Hey y'all, unfortunately it looks like this mod is permanently incompatible with b42. While I was able to update the recipes to work with the new craftRecipe code, turns out you can no longer set items to a negative weight. Any weight eraser I created in the game set itself to 0 encumbrance instead.

Barring a revert in the base code, the way this mod goes about achieving negative weight is now impossible in b42. If there is another way to force an item to be negative weight, it'll have to be done by a better modder, unfortunately.

:(

I'm really sorry that the only answer I can come up with after all this time is "no dice", but for unknown reasons (probably related to bugs) The Indie Stone is no longer allowing negative weight in their codebase.

Sorry to anyone waiting on an update, work and the holidays have had me busy. I have not had the time to check whether it is incompatible with b42 and if it actually needs an update. Should have more time in the next week or two.

I doubt it is incompatible with b42 due to how the mod works, but I'll take a look at it later today! Hopefully it just needs to be marked as compatible.

Great mod. I didn't want an uber bag with ten thousand items in it, so I just made a single eraser for my duffel bag so I wouldn't have to run back and forth from my base every few minutes. Simple to use and works well.
