The first version of the three-ski snowmobile NLK-16, manufactured in 1937 under the leadership of chief designer N.M. Andreev, was mass-produced by industry in transport and sanitary versions. An improved model of the machine, made according to a four-ski design and designated NKL-16/41, was released in 1940-1941. Since 1942, this sled, in a significantly improved version, was produced under the symbol NKL-16/42.

Snowmobiles of all commercially produced types, including NKL-16, NKL-16/41 and NKL-16/42, were widely used on the fronts of the Great Patriotic War, especially in the winter of 1941/42. They were used for operational communications, delivery of military cargo, and they were used for patrol, landing and combat operations. When transporting troops, the snowmobiles not only carried fighters with full weapons on board, but also towed 18-20 skiers on special cables. In combat conditions, they towed trailed skids along the sides, which housed soldiers with a machine gun and a second crew number with the necessary ammunition. In addition, soldiers sitting in the vehicle could fire from machine guns through hatches that opened in the roof of the vehicle.

The completed snowmobile transport battalions successfully carried out numerous tasks of the Soviet Army command for reconnaissance and communications, and also worked with combat snowmobile units - NKL-26. This made it possible not only to carry out raids unexpected for the enemy to destroy manpower, but also, if necessary, to quickly land landing groups to consolidate strongholds and territories captured from the enemy.
