Southeastern Afghanistan, March 3, 2002. SEAL Team MAKO 30 was en route to establish a pre-dawn observation post on the peak of Takur Ghar, in support of Army elements moving through the Southern end of the Shahi-Kot valley. Taliban and Al-Qaeda fighters abandoned their positions in the valley, in the face of overwhelming U.S. forces, and the SEAL's OP was needed to detect and observe enemy positions, and direct fires and movement elements onto them. Intel said this mountain was devoid of any enemy, but the locals knew the strategic importance as much as we did...

As we approached the LZ in our helicopter, we noticed footprints in the fresh snow. While we discussed aborting the mission, we were hit by an RPG. PO1 Roberts fell from the chopper as the pilots took evasive actions to save the helicopter from crashing on the mountaintop. Roberts is alone on the peak, and we don't leave any men behind. The rest of MAKO 30 will regroup and go back for him, and a QRF of Army Rangers is on deck for support.

Author's note: I had to take some artistic liberties in making this an enjoyable mission. There are aspects that are factually incorrect, though it is based loosely on real life events.
