Description

Another dark and gritty map since January? I know it's a bit of a surprise. I've always been extremely fascinated by the 2001 - 2002 iteration of the Citadel. It is, simply put, a complete juxtaposition of everything outside it. It looks and feels like a run-down hospital with the ceramic walls, chains, pipes and the horrifyingly disturbing organic looking pipes. The place felt like it was alive. Valve was really onto something here.

And I'm a bit surprised that not more people are talking about. Sure, I could be looking at the wrong areas. But anytime I hear discussions of the leak it's always either Air Exchange or Depot or whatever, but never this. And to hit the nail on my head, there was no original map based on it. Technically, there is one, but it could be even better. And this was born after a period of 5 days in development.

Those days I'd were the most troubled. Not necessarily because I ran into a creative road block or whatever but that the map was so weird and massive the compilers kept having a fit. The heart meshes used to be a massive displacement but it caused vbsp and vrad to crash since it was too complex. There was also the issue of ungodly amounts of visleaves but func_detail'ing most of it alleviated the problem.

i would find it nice if you removed the walkable floor where the stalker pods are and replaced it with small metal bridges that are in mid air, would look creepier than it already is. I think its like that in one of the leak maps

honestly, the thing that made the early citadel look brutal in my opinion was the incredibly rough lighting (probably due to the engine limitations)
