The Large Floating Drydock USS ABSD-10

(Fictional)

In 1941, the United States Navy began the construction of five Montana class battleships. In 1944, in order to improve the operational efficiency of these soon to be launched super battleships, the US Navy began customizing a series of auxiliary ships for them, and a larger floating dry dock was one of these projects. The first ship of the new large floating dry dock, USS ABSD-10, began segmented construction in April 1944 at Everett Pacific Shipbuilding and Dry Dock Company, Chicago Bridge and Steel Company, and Pollock Stockton Shipbuilding Company. It entered service on August 10, 1945. After connecting all ten sections together, her total length is 330m, the load-bearing section is 300m long and 88m wide, and the internal net width is 47m. This shipyard typically deploys three or more barges.
After service, the floating dock was deployed to the Ulithi Atoll in the Pacific, and during wartime service, it served as a major overhaul site for the Montana class battleships Montana and Louisiana. After the war, the ship was retired in May 1947 and returned to service in 1951 after being sealed for a period of time. Afterwards, the floating dock served in the United States Navy until its retirement in 1989. In 2018, all sections of the drydock were sold and dismantled.
