The Dealey-class destroyer escort USS Dealey (hull number: DE-1006) was the first post-war escort ship in the United States and is considered the progenitor of all modern American escort ships. This ship began construction on November 8, 1953, at the Bath Iron Works in Maine, USA, and was completed on June 3, 1954. The design of the Dealey-class originated from the need to improve upon the PC (submarine chasers) series. The existing PC-461 class could no longer meet the anti-submarine warfare requirements of the time, leading to plans for a new generation of PCs, the SCB 51 project. However, as the design expanded, the displacement of these ships surged to 1500 tons, far exceeding the original intentions, resulting in the cancellation of the SCB 51. It was replaced by the SCB 72 project, which focused on the development of escort ships, eventually leading to the creation of the Dealey-class. Due to the complexity of the design, the Dealey-class was very costly to build, with only 13 ships constructed in the end.
