Starwidow Class Fighter

Introduced into the market as an easy to maintain fighter for security or mercenary work - but with sales hampered by a poorly chosen name and marketing strategy, the price of the well built Starwidow plummeted upon its introduction. A few months into its introduction it was selling at virtually the cost of its parts. After a year of poor profits, its maker Astro-Telemetrics, pulled the model from its line.

It took a few more years before those who had bought the craft were realised that with its superb build quality Its repuration rebounded exponentially. With minimal running costs it was said that at one point delivery boys could buy and run a Starwidow indefinitely with a year's savings. Five years later and it was almost impossible to pick up a Starwidow on the open market: the model itself was withdrawn.

Starwidows have a reputation for working when other ships have simply given up from lack of maintainance. A single squadron of the short range Starwidow fighter, operating out of the spaceport of New Bardos, are credited with the destruction of no fewer than six pirate cruisers, and numerous smaller ships over the past four years - without a single shipsment of spare parts. Of the original 12 fighters in the squadron, two were lost to enemy fire, one went missing investigating a gravitational anomaly, and two (which had caught fire when pure oxygen accidently flooded a hangar bay while a mechanic was using a blowtorch) were cannibalised for spare parts - but the remaining seven were in perfect working order. continuing to make sorties until their replacements arrived.
