Description
The Cara Discrepancy

(Potentially the first in the "Discrepancy" series)

Originally made for the Portal Mapping and Modding Discord Server "Redemption Arc" Competition (With sub-choice as "Halloween")

Inspired by "The Office Prank" series by Allison Ghost. I have not seen much horror maps on the Portal 2 workshop (I haven't really checked, so that's on me I guess), but I consider The Office Prank to be a pretty good representation of how to make Portal 2 scary, so this map was my first attempt at it.

Story
You are Cara Langley, an employee of Aperture Science in the 1950s. One day she finds herself on the floor of a dilapidated office, with no memory as to how she got here.

Okay, so, this map is not complete to how I would have liked it. I decided it was a good idea to start work on the map mid-way into the competition, and it took me a lot longer to complete than I thought, so I ended up not being able to implement everything. Below is a list of things that I didn't get to finish.

  • Fixing most projected textures. They weren't working, like at all, for some reason (except for 1), but I never had time to debug it
  • Color correction and tonemapping implementation
  • Custom models, specifically the player model. I changed the colors at least, because it was the quickest option
  • Custom animations
  • Building cubemaps. It wasn't working, and I ran out of time
  • Some miscellaneous final stuff that would be a spoiler
  • Some final bugfixes (some parts might be a little more jank than I would have liked). For example, it appears that all of my custom soundscapes just decided to not work at all, even after I tested that they did.
  • Some other stuff I forgot

I will try to fix some or all of these things eventually, but for now they will stay, as this is the state the map was in at the time of the competition's completion.

Also, this is my first time ever making anything in any Portal 2 styles, so things may look weird or inaccurate at times. I only had a couple weeks to make the entire map, while also studying Portal 2 styles, so of course that wasn't ideal.
It's also basically my first time ever uploading a map I made to the workshop (not really, but I only ever uploaded a few bad BEEmod maps a long time ago on another account)

There also may possibly be one minor, inconsistency, regarding one point about the underlying plot. I won't spoil it of course, but I only realized this after I had already completed the map. I think it's minor and vague enough that most people won't even notice it anyways. Heck, it might not even be an inconsistency depending on how you look at it. In fact, it might even make sense from some angles.

I enjoyed this map! sometimes a bit too hard to know where im going though, if a bit more direction was given to what i need to do, got stuck on the ending scene didn't know i had to look at the "thing" thought i had to portal into that room so the end took my a little while to find out, but it was fun none the less

Extremely dark hard to see were to go and as I'm progressing my walking is getting slower and slower and slower ,this is not a portal chamber rather Half Life episode 3 and 3/4

You can avoid triggering the look trigger and portal into the room, then go back to a portal surface and go through the portal and then you can shoot both portals in the room and soft lock yourself.
