Lore

Overview
Upon Sol's destruction in 2272, the Terran Union fractured into a myriad of different nations. The largest among these were the:
Armstrong Mining Cooperative (Also called the Monolith Cooperative, due to it's discovery of the Armstrong Monolith), a megacorporation claiming to be the succesor to Earth's government,
Centaurus Constellation, an unstable yet powerful cluster of stars,
Cabal of Sol, a union of systems that mostly believe in one religion, and
Orion Federation, a loosely-tied alliance in the Orion Constellation.

The four major powers weren't the only ones fighting for domination however. Many small nations and system-states often originating from independence movements were suddenly free. One of these nation-states was the Vanad Federation.

History of the Federation
What originally was the Vanad Independence Movement, named after the planet Vanad, quickly became the Vanad Federation after the collapse of the Terran Union. Even though it is surrounded by aggresive warlords and major powers, the nation has managed to stay independent due to a combination of a strongly militarized economy, irregular tactics, and cautious neutrality. The Federation however, isn't without it's problems. Political fighting between civilian officials and military leaders makes the government unstable at best, and autarkic policies often cause resource shortages, and hurt the economy. Furthermore, the nation sees frequent violations of it's neutrality in the form of hostile incursions into it's territory.

The Second Vanad Federation is a continuation to the first Vanad Federation that came into existence quickly after Sol's destruction, and came to an end almost as quickly as it began. It faced numerous issues, such as various secession movements and a failure to pacify the nation's fringe systems. However instability peaked after the governement failed to prevent one of it's systems from seceding, which caused others to follow, making the nation fracture. After a series of unification wars, a new government proclaimed the Second Vanad Federation.

The Vanad Federation is a hybrid of both democracy and authoritarianism, with elections electing a president for life, and the military having some control over domestic affairs. Furtermore the voters are government officials instead of the people. However the public still enjoys some rights, like the option to enlist regardless of status.

Ship Design
Vanad ship designs are usually asymmetric and boxy, often utilizing 1x1 wedges. Furthermore, designers usually neglect the looks of a ship, resulting in paint designs often following edges, thrusters and other parts, instead of intricate designs of other factions.

Ion weapons are rarely, if ever used on Vanad ships. Instead, cannons, flak, missiles and laser blasters are far more utilized. Shields are often used on larger ships, but usually aren't used on low-cost craft.

The Vanad Federation's production capabilities are more limited than those of larger powers, so to maintain an adequate fleet, Vanad high command developed a doctrine of "quantity over quality". The result is large ships being far less common in Vanad fleets, instead smaller vessels take up the role of capital ships.
