The M112A1 howitzer is a modernization of the M115 203mm howitzer, developed in 1939 and entered U.S. service in the early 1940s. The M115 was used extensively in World War II, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War.

In the 1970s, an improved version of the M115 was created, designated the M112A1. The modernization included improving the carriage design to increase stability and accuracy and increasing the mobility of the gun.

However, the M112A1 project was not very successful. The excessive power of the gun led to difficulties in operation, and the development of missile systems significantly reduced the relevance of heavy artillery of this type. As a result, the M112A1 was not widely used and was soon replaced by more modern and versatile weapon systems.
