The M-51 Super Sherman, an upgraded variant of the iconic American Sherman tank, was developed by the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) during the 1950s and 1960s. Following Israel’s War of Independence, the IDF sought to modernize its armored forces, relying heavily on surplus World War II tanks. While the original Sherman was a reliable platform, it was quickly outclassed by the more advanced armor and weaponry of neighboring nations.

Israel initiated a program to enhance the Sherman’s capabilities, resulting in the M-51. The tank was fitted with a French CN 105 F1 105mm gun, a powerful weapon originally designed for larger tanks like the AMX-30. The suspension system was improved, and the engine was upgraded to a Cummins diesel for better performance in the Middle Eastern climate.
