In the early 20th century, locomotive engineers in the Donner Pass region of the Southern Pacific railroad were facing a major issue with the new MC-1 class 2-8-8-2 locomotives; They were almost being asphyxiated, due to the amount of tunnels and the large volume of smoke the locomotives put out. To temporarily solve this problem, one engineer decided to run the locomotive backwards, with the cab at the front. SP design engineers took note, and developed the AC class of locomotives, also known as the Cab Forwards.
This unconventional design had the engine facing backwards, with the cab at the front and the boiler at the back, the tender being located behind the boiler, and was an oil burner. The design was improved extensively during the rest of the steam era, culminating in the AC-12.

Not all SP articulateds ran on this line however. The AC-9 class locomotive was essentially a backwards Cab Forwards, and were nicknamed as such. The coal burning, 2-8-8-4 'Yellowstone' type ran on the railroad in the Southwest, occasionally pulling passenger trains. In their later years, they were converted to burn oil, and were sent to California.

After the railroad dieselized, almost all of its articulated locomotives were scrapped, with the exception of the final Cab Forward, AC-12 N°4294.

My list of mods I created last year has been completed! This doesn't mean the end of workshop items, or even mods. I'll still make them when I have free time, but I'm going to take a bit of a break to rest, unwind, and focus on real life. Stay safe, folks!
