Description
Here is the Manhattan-class ocean liners of the United States Lines.

Two ships were built, "Manhattan" and "Washington", and were the largest American liners before the SS America in 1939. During their peacetime career, they served the New York to Hamburg route. In 1936, Manhattan carried the US Olympic team to the Berlin Summer Olympics. In 1939, just a few months before the outbreak of WW2, Manhattan carried Jewish children from Germany to Britain during the "Kindertransport". When war broke out, Manhattan and Washington were transferred to the New York-Naples-Genoa route and helped bring many Americans home from Europe before being transferred again to the New York to San Francisco route due to the increase fear in U-boats. In 1941, months before the US would join the war, Manhattan and Washington would be handed to the US Navy to be converted into troopships, being renamed "Wakefield" and "Mount Vernon" respectively. Both ships, along with the SS America (now USS West Point), were used in a secret mission to transport British troopships to Singapore. When the US joined the war, Wakefield was still in Singapore where she would be damaged by Japanese bombers, while Mount Vernon helped transport troops to Australia and New Zealand. In 1942, Wakefield suffered a major fire while in port, but would under go a major reconstruction into a troopship that was completed in 1944. Both ships were used in the European and Pacific theaters during the war, transporting troops, prisoners, and evacuating wounded soldiers. After the war, both ships were used to bring American soldiers home. Wakefield was decommissioned in 1946 and placed into the reserve fleet while Mount Vernon briefly returned to civilian service under her old name, Washington. In 1953, she was decommissioned and placed in the reserve fleet along with her sister, both ships being scrapped in 1965.
