THE FOOL 0

Yu Narukami and Izanagi from Persona 4 Arena Ultimax are now playable in Fraymakers, with a moveset most familiar to the original title! With the experience I got from Chie and the many new ideas I got from programming over the last year I was able to portray Narukami as he appears in P4AU to the best of my ability, with many of Chie's mechanics as well as many new ones.

PERSONA

"Picture in your head your own appearance, as well as your alter ego. Your Persona." A Persona is the manifestation of one's true self, and is a being conjured from their own spirit. These entities can be used to battle against opponents within the TV World. Yu Narukami's Persona, Izanagi, can be used throughout much of his moveset as a means of attacking, from his specials, aerials, to even his strong attacks and supers. These attacks are completely disjointed from Narukami's body and are instead conjured by Izanagi himself. Despite this they cannot be stopped by hitting Izanagi, one must hit Narukami in order to stop his Persona from attacking.

PERSONA DISPLACEMENT SYSTEM

Izanagi has a set amount of time in which he remains on the field after completing an attack, with that time varying in length depending on the attack he used. If Narukami commands Izanagi to perform a different attack after completing his first one then Izanagi will perform that attack in the position he's currently in regardless of how close he is to Yu. This can be chained as much as one would like, however if Narukami takes damage or Izanagi gets too close to a death plane then he will be deactivated and will return back to Narukami.


SPECIAL MOVES

Neutral Special (Zio)
Izanagi casts an electric projectile and throws it at the opponent. Since this is Izanagi's attack the projectile spawns relative to where Izanagi is, not Narukami. This attack is B-Reversable and can be used again even if the previous projectile is still on screen.

Side Special (Raging Lion)
Narukami leaps into the air with his Katana pointing downward. Pressing the Special Button again will launch Narukami downwards in either direction chosen. If you do not press Special then Narukami will do a fake-out attack, and you are then actionable in the air. This attack has a sweet spot spike during the follow up and the fake-out can be used as a third jump to recover.

Down Special (Swift Strikes)
Narukami slides onto the ground with Izanagi, dealing damage along the way. Regardless of where Izanagi is he will always return back to Yu to perform this attack. Yu's hurtbox is very low during this attack, allowing him to use it as both an approach as well as an anti projectile tool.

Up Special (Big Gamble)
Narukami performs an upwards slash that deals damage along the way. Similarly to P4AU this attack is frame 1 intangible and can be Super Cancelled. If the attack is baited out it is very easy to punish.


SUPERS [REQUIRES 50 METER]

Ziodyne (236236B)
Izanagi summons an extremely large beam of electricity. During this animation he is completely uninterruptable, even if you hit Yu! However, Narukami is unable to perform any of his Persona attacks during this super. This super is frame 1 intangible and the beam gets weaker if an opponent is closer to the blast zone. This super can also be performed in the air.

Lightning Flash (236236A)
Narukami dashes forward and pierces the opponent with a lightning strike. If this super is performed close to an edge then Yu will cancel his attack and carry his momentum offstage. If you would like to keep him on the ground, however, you can hold the shield button and he will remain grounded for the duration of the attack. There is no intangibility on this super.


SPECIAL MECHANICS

ONE MORE [REQUIRES 50 METER]

If Narukami inputs Grab during any attack he is able to enter a free state and carry his momentum for 50 meter. This allows for extensions of combos and for discovering hitboxes that usually get muddled up by multihits.

GATLINGS

Narukami maintains the exact same gatling system that is found in P4AU. This means that he is able to chain his normal together on hit exactly how he does in his base game. Jab is able to cancel into F-Tilt, and F-Tilt is able to link into Dash Attack since that would be a totally legal cancel in P4AU. Since Dash Attack requires being in a running state to access, it is performed by doing 66A instead (Forward > Forward > Attack).

SPECIAL CANCELLING

Narukami is able to cancel most of his normal attacks into special moves on hit, with forward strong being the only exception. Use this to further better your combo game and maintain offense.

COUNTER HITS

If Narukami hits the opponent during their attack then he gets bonus damage and hitstun during his next combo. This is signified by the announcer yelling "COUNTER" and the screen shaking.

DASH CANCELLING

During dash attack if Izanagi lands a hit and Narukami inputs 66 (Forward > Forward) he is able to enter a dash animation instead of either jumping or cancelling into a special. This can be used for different combos or mix ups than what one generally wants to go for here.

COMBO SCALING

Due to most of Narukami's moveset being cancellable on hit as well as the versatility he gets out of the Persona Displacement System I have added a hidden mechanic to prevent long inescapable combos from being too detrimental. Narukami's takes a 1% stacked nerf to his damage for every hit he does during a true combo, which gets reset if the opponent breaks out. While this doesn't seem like a big deal and it won't come up in low level play it makes long, inescapable turbo mode-esque combos go from dealing 80% to 40% which I believe to be necessary for a character like this. This WILL be adjusted in the future if it serves as a problem.

BURST (A + B + Shield)

Burst is a mechanic ported over from P4AU. It is a meter separate from your Super meter that you get 100% of at the beginning of every game. At 100% you are able to cancel any attack (with the exception of Up Special) into your One More Burst. If you successfully hit a One More Burst, your hitstun is multiplied by 1.2 during your next combo and your damage scaling is reset from whatever combo you did before hitting Burst. Regardless of if you hit One More Burst or not, activating it will always deplete your Burst Meter. Burst regains passively within 90 seconds, however one can gain burst meter from hitting Jab 3 or dying.


AWAKENING MODE

Narukami maintains his awakening state found in P4AU. Once Yu has reached his final stock he receives many buffs to his character. Firstly, his meter is changed to allow for a max of 150 instead of the usual 100. Secondly, he receives a defensive buff, increasing his weight by 62.5% (80 > 130). Finally Yu gains 50 meter and is able to perform 2 new supers.



AWAKENING SUPERS

Cross Slash (236236 Grab) [REQUIRES 50 METER]
Yu performs an electric slash and Izanagi follows up with a slam afterwards. Does a significant amount of damage and allows for either a tech chase or a combo depending on the height at which Narukami hit the initial slash. Has full intangibility from frame 1 until the active frames of the slash.

Thunder God Dance (236236 Taunt) [REQUIRES 50 METER PER STAGE]
Yu performs a 10 hit combo and commands Izanagi to follow up with a final slash. Requires 150 meter in total and knowing the button combo that's required to chain the hits together (Figure It Out!). You also need the proper stage positioning to hit it since you move throughout the entire combo. If you can meet ALL of these conditions then the attack does 50 - 60% and kills very early.
