Description
Whack AL's Optical Landing Guide (OLS / FLOLS) simplified
Overview
This is a simplified version of an Optical Landing System. This is copy paste ready, and DOES NOT require modifications to vehicles to operate. The system uses a small radar and can be set to any desired Glide Slope between 0-90 degrees. The system also features a manual go around input that users can use with a push button.

The Design
There are two different sizes that operate the same. They are not a replica of an existing ball/meatball although the light array operates mostly the same way. Green lights turn on to show the ball has detected a landing plane. The ball does not move rather lights will turn on if you are higher or lower than the glide slope patter. The custom guide slope angle can be set by configuring the Micro controller at the OLS's base. This design is simple as it does not need to receive any information for an aircraft. Please note because this uses a radar auto counter measures may be triggered.

Updated : Now there is a Composite send that will feed the FLOLS' data into a radial segment. The channel out is 42069, but can be changed to whatever you need! Channels can be adjusted as needed! Also please note that this will transmit any data, not just for your plane's meaning it may be clouded by other plane's approaches but you can also guide your friends in if you want to this way! If you dont have the radial implemented, feel free to delete the RX.

Use
  1. Copy one of the OLS bases
  2. Paste the base where you would like it
  3. Set the glide slope angle in the micro controller (in degrees)
  4. Hook up electric
  5. Turn on the system

WORKSHOP USE Feel free to use this creation as you see fit, add it to creations, modify it. Please no re-uploads

@renzo it would be much easier to broadcast information from the carrier you would be trying to land on. The landing guide has a margin off error that would make this very difficult, it is more of a suggestion then a guide. The carrier I am working on broadcast a physics sensor to any channel you like, this data would be much easier to program an "auto land" feature with since you can pinpoint coordinates and a heading with 1 radio signal. I probably will not modify this guide further as it is designed to be as simple as possible, and I personally feel like there would be a much better easier approach using a physics sensor on the ship you would like to land on.

could you perhaps have the green side indcators turn on and off to tell you if you lined up with the runway as well

(perhaps if you send this info out on a radio frequency someone else could make a microcontroller that can autoland a plane on a aircraft carrier)

It predicts if the airplane is above or below the glide slope it should approach at, it does not need distance since it is on an angle, it is only comparing if the plane is higher or lower than the desired angle.

So how exactly does it use radar, can it calculate target altitude or smth?

That would be my other thought yeah you could use an RGB spot light that changes color, my only concern is since the spotlights bloom so they might not be that precise when needing to reference them far away….

use spotlights

track the plane on radar, change the color based on the position of the plane?

Best way to do it would likely be with an infared laser that is being found by the plane not the other way around….

Glide not glue lol*

Hmmm I suppose it could be done, wish there were more laser colors in stormwork, that would be the major problem I see, honestly if you slap a laser to the meatball it will project the correct glued slope, it just won’t be on center. I can look into it, but I won’t make it if vehicles need modification for its use!
