Description
Hungry Forties
for Victoria 3 1.9.*

Disease and death in every quarter – the once hardy population worn away to emaciated skeletons – fever, dropsy, diarrhea, and famine rioting in every filthy hovel, and sweeping away whole families...seventy-five tenants ejected here, and a whole village in the last stage of destitution there…dead bodies of children flung into holes hastily scratched in the earth without shroud or coffin…every field becoming a grave, and the land a wilderness.

Hungry Forties adds the European Potato Failure of 1845/46 that historically increased unrest across Europe, as well as the deadly Great Hunger that killed and displaced millions of Irish people.

  • In 1843, an outbreak of Potato Blight will impact New England and nearby states, harming subsistence output.
  • In 1845, the initial wave of Blight will reach Europe, impacting output in the British Isles, France, Rhine, Prussia, and Sweden.
  • In 1846, the Blight will return with a vengeance, causing severe subsistence loss in North Germany, Rhine, and Denmark. Ireland and the Scottish Highlands will suffer a total collapse of the peasant food supply.
  • Great Britain recieves a short Irish Famine Journal Entry with a few events and options for responding to the crisis.
  • Also in 1846, the Grain harvest will fail across Europe, impacting the food supply even more.
  • After 1848, the potato blight can rarely return as a Harvest Condition.

A few changes have also been made to the Corn Laws JE:
  • Great Britain now begins the game with Mercantilism
  • Corn Laws JE can now complete by passing Protectionism and lowering grain prices sufficiently
  • Corn Laws JE will now invalidate if grain prices drop to baseline even without changing trade laws

New patch adds -20 Migration Restrictiveness during the Irish Famine, allowing them to migrate away.

@FRAA turns out GBR's Migration Controls law only checks for the base cultural acceptance of a pop, preventing any Irish pops from leaving.

For unknown reason, irish will not migrate though the mass migration created by this mod was triggered.

Does this cause any game stress around 1850? my game always crashes around then when I play as nejd.

Just gotta say, I really love mods like this. Adding simple bits of flavor for a hyperspecific historical event is super great. Does this add any new state traits?

@Muck it seems like scripted mass migrations just don't work at all, like in the vanilla Populating the Americas journal

Hey, I'm using this mod alongside Hail Columbia, but I may be having issues regarding the mass migration of Irish pops to the US. I do get the mass migration event in multiple states, but the Irish population doesn't grow, as if nobody is actually immigrating.

I have this mod placed near the bottom of my mod list, only ahead of Hail Columbia. None of my other mods should be conflicting with this.

Any ideas?
