Historical Torpedo Failures v1.2 (Full Release Compatible)

Description
!!!Requires a New Career Start!!!

I have completely reworked this mod after researching historical torpedo failure rates during the war and during testing trials. As I am limited with what I can modify using only the data sheet, this mod’s duds represent multiple historical failure types.

This mod aims to closely match historical performance with what can be modified without scripting or coding.

Historically there wasn’t “warming” of Torpedoes in the same way the game implements… Electrics were kept warm in the tubes and in storage, and Steam Torpedoes just needed preventative maintenance.

I've used the game’s warming action as a difficulty toggle between the full historical scale of dud percentages for cold torpedoes (10.5-36%) and an easier scale for warm torpedoes (8-27%).

Warming torpedoes will now also increase the impact angle allowance for a “Perfect Hit” which decreases the base dud chance by 25% with all torpedoes.

That being said, impact angles are now set to historical tolerances for their pistol types. Each pistol has a max tolerance angle and a perfect hit angle; anything outside the max tolerance angle will automatically be a dud, while anything inside the perfect hit angle will apply the 25% reduction to the dud chance of that torpedo.

Your accuracy will be the difference between having duds equal to or more than the highest historical percentages, or comparable to the lowest historical percentages. This is true regardless of which difficulty option you choose; playing with cold torpedoes or warming your torpedoes, your dud chances will still fall within historical performances.

The cooldown for warm torpedoes is now set to 7 days.

Torpedo Damage is still set to 5.

Torpedo Reloads still take 15 minutes before other modifiers.

Cold electric torpedo speed and distance reverted back to default values. (Could bring this option back if requested.)

Magnetic pistol values have been adjusted for testing purposes for this update. (Please leave feedback with your results if you use the magnetic pistols.)

Zielen Sie gerade und wahr, herr Kaleun, und viel Glück.

Data used from source material {LINK REMOVED}

Summery of torpedo failures, reported by German sub commanders:

in 09.39 – 12.5 %
in 10.39 – 29.5 %
in 11.39 – 33.3 %
in 12.39 – 19.5 %
in 01.40 - 38.0 %
in 02.40 – 26.2 %
in 03.40 – 10.5 %
in 04.40 – 31.7 %
06.40 until 12.40 – 13.2 %

If the entire Torpedokrise was exclusively the result of technical problems in torpedo design, then one would
expect a fairly constant rate of failures amongst all front-line U-boats. Yet in his war log on
March 3, 1940, Dönitz wrote that premature detonations would flare up after lying dormant for a
while, and that it was “notable that premature detonations are far more numerous with some
boats than with others.”
Trompelt arrives at his premise that it was “Not the torpedoes that had [failed], but it was rather human error as a result of unconsidered special conditions.” These “unconsidered special conditions,” though never specifically defined, appear by and large to refer to what Trompelt perceives as the inadequate organization and technical
training given to U-boat officers as well as those responsible for the on-board care of the
torpedo, the Torpedomechanikers-Maat.

How many duds has everyone had so far?

does this work with 2025.1?

Hello, just to help if you ever get back to uboat, I asked a lot of questions about what maintenance actually does, https://discord.com/channels/326159516595126274/1291914481575657514/1291977187301261413
This leads to a discord conversation where darkraven read the properties of the maintenance buff effect. I use a scuffed merge of mods but if you get back to modding maybe this can help further adjust the torpedo failure rate? Hope it's useful

Magnetic pistols was last thing I tried to update with this mod and may need more fine-tuning... I've taken a couple months of break from this game as I got burned out, so when I get back to playing it I'll take a look at the magnetic pistols some more.

I have been using magnetic pistols most of the time due to the high number of duds with the impact system. It seems to me that magnetic torpedoes fail much less often and that the impact mode has to be always very close to 90 for them to detonate.(i am with VIIB ,my best torpedo pi+, october 1940)

I don't know if this would be historical, but could you possibly tweak the dud chance between a t1 p1 and t2 p1, since as it stands; aside from speed option, they both share the same dud and mag failure rate, meaning there is no reason to ever take the t1 p1 AND the t1 p1.1, since the t2 p1 and p1.1 are free.
Unless I'm missing something.
Also could you put the torpedo prices fror your other mod to this one?

The perks will all work to reduce dud chances as long as the torpedo still hits within the max impact angle for that pistol type.

Thanks. "Torpedo crisis veteran" adds -20% duds. Any effect with the mod?

It will still work, however only if you still make a hit inside the maximum impact angle for it not to be a dud

The engineers have the Thorough skill available, eliminating the risk of detonator failure and extending the torpedo maintained time, what happens if i chose that skill ? has any effect while this mod is installed?

This is a game changer.
TY very much for this excellent MOD.

Skipper mod + no map contact + this mod, give you a real taste of the real expericence of Uboat commanders.
Now you REALLY want improved fuses ^^
On main target, when HQ designate one, you better use a full salvo of 4 to ensure the destruction in one shot.
And then, you have 1 full hour of reload.
This change lot of things in strategy and tactics.
You need even more anticipation in your attack.
Great job, a must have, thank you very much.
This game is really much more advanced than any historical WWII subsim now.
