Description
Introduction:
This is a fairly hacky mod that adds a new UI element displaying alien portaits on the Galaxy map. It's an effect you may have noticed paradox have edited on to various trailers and teasers because it looks really damn cool, but was never actually implemented in the game!

Since we spend the vast majority of our time on galaxy view I've found this change has a really significant impact on my enjoyment of the game and I hope you like it too.

How It Works:
Just start a new campaign and you'll notice your empires chosen species is now displayed in your galactic territory. It doesn't matter whether you're playing the blorg, dwarves, that starfish portrait or whatever else, I've set up a unique image for them all (I've also added slight drop shadow effect.)

A Galaxy of Portraits:
This mod doesn't just create your portrait - but every empire! And this is really what's most fun about it - as you interact with your neighbours and discover other empires further away you'll have a nice prominent image reminding you of who they are without having to dig through the diplomacy or planet view screens. I cannot understate how much I've enjoyed this, it creates a very cool sense of the story and populations of your particular galaxy. You really feel the difference each new campaign.

Home-Worlds and History:
I absolutely love home-worlds. I think the story of an empire eventually moving their capital AWAY from the place they evolved is fascinating! But Vanilla stellaris doesn't really do much with them. Happily, what this mod does is to actually mark the alien home-worlds at game start and it's here that their image will be displayed. So many years later, and even after taking those aliens into your empire (or something more sinister!) you'll still have a fun map showing where each species was and get an extra of geography that vanilla doesn't provide.

Minimal Overhead:
This mod only runs a single event at game start, it has no CPU cost beyond that, it doesn't mess with balance or gameplay in any way. It's pure flavour.

Recommendations:
  • If you're interested in some of my other UI work you might like my Planet Viewer.
  • My favourite galaxy map on the workshop bar none is Piets' Stargazer. The screenshots don't do it justice to how volumetric and 3d it is, you have got to try it!
  • Check the collection at the top for load order details.

Thanks:
To the users of the stellaris wiki who have posted useful screenshots of many of the portraits in the game.

I really like the idea of this mod, but it does - as others have also mentioned, take up quite a bit of space on the map, and the opacity of the portraits does compound this effect. I would suggest to perhaps make the portraits a tad smaller, and/or do the holographic change you've mentioned. Would be a great addition. Also, for some reason it doesn't trigger properly when opening a game as a shattered ring origin in ironman.

Damn, that sucks. I am used to "puppet animation" so hoped i could make some unique animations for them :P

That was always the plan when I first decided to make the mod! I would have loved that. But sadly, as far as I know, we can't call up animated portraits like that. I have more information in the Dear PDX thread above if you're interested.

If it were possible it would have looked better, cost less data, been way easier to make as a mod, and could properly react to EXACT empire leader clothes and genders and stuff. It would have been epic.

Would it be possible to make them play animations?

Ye I remember that too but same as you can't find it again lol

Yeah transparency might be good. The PDX version I'm remembering actually had them as holograms that were vaguely transparent too!

The only issue I have is that it obscures a bit of vision, would be cool if it were transparent to some extent. But always love your mods.

Ye I thought it was on one of the federation or nemesis trailers... but cant find either.

When I made this workshop page back in summer I was looking SO HARD for one of the official Stellaris trailers/streams/whatever where they had edited this effect on, but I couldn't find it! Really annoyed me, lol. I swear it was on a dev clash or something but no dice.

It's funny because they implemented this in Age of Wonder 4
