Description
The 5050 Series (5050形) is a subway vehicle operated by Nagoya Municipal Subway since 1992.

Introduced as the fourth generation of vehicles on the Higashiyama Line, the 5050 series was produced to replace the remaining non air-conditioned trains in service. It's basic design is similar to the 2000 series on the Meijo and Meiko lines, but all cars in this series was produced by Nippon Sharyo. The design of the front cab is based on the 5000 series, which was then in active service. As the one of the earliest subway lines to open in Japan, the Higashiyama line is powered by 600V DC third rail and operates on standard gauge track, which is also found on the Meijo and Meiko lines but not the 3 others. The interior is standard subway-style long seating, and the 5050 series was the first Higashiyama Line vehicle to have wheelchair spaces. A total of 27 6-car trains were manufactured over an 8 year period, which allowed all types other than the 5000 series to be phased out. The fleet was outfitted with ATO and additional safety equipment in conjunction with the installation of platform gates on the line, it was also modified for one-man operation in 2017 to reduce costs. All vehicles are currently in active service.
