The forest-steppes of Ukraine and Belorussia were not the most familiar battlefield for the Germans. The exhausting heat of 1941, counterattacks of the Red Army and the suspicious attitude of the locals, which later turned into violent resistance... Yet in the fall, Operation Barbarossa was still in full swing, and German grenadiers gazed with joy at the golden expanse of land that was to pass to Germany after a victory that seemed so close.
