The Darksign [REPENTOGON]

Description
REQUIRES REPENTOGON TO FUNCTION!

The Darksign has appeared in the basement...

This item grants you the curse of undeath, but at a heavy price.
Upon death, Isaac will resurrect at the starting room of his current floor as a Soul, a fragile spirit who gains the powers of flight and spectral tears, but will die upon taking any damage. Each death will remove one red heart container, bone heart, or soul/black heart depending on what the player currently has. In order to restore his humanity, Isaac must return to his place of death and recover his skeletal remains. Be wary however, as every non-boss enemy on the floor will revive with you, and battles that have been fought will need to be fought once again...

This is my first Lua-based mod, so it's possible there may be some bugs. I've tested the mod extensively, but if you find something I missed, please let me know! My goal was to create an item that didn't feel out of place among the other Isaac collectibles, so if you feel a rebalance is necessary, I'm happy to hear your suggestions. Thank you!

Based on an item of the same name from the Dark Souls series

@WingdingsMarcy000 ...How to jump?

Sounds like a fun challenge lol. Glad you like the item!

this is like a weird spin on the R Key challenge or the "Glowing Hourglass on hit" challenge, it's fun! I could imagine a challenge where you start with this item, Spirit Sword and maybe Curse of Darkness, to really give you the Souls vibe, i wish we had a dodge roll item in Isaac

I thought about adding a costume for a while, but I eventually decided against it. Mostly I just didn't feel like making custom costumes for specific characters and changing the player color and whatnot, but also because having a full body dark souls costume felt like a bit much and would make the item stand out more than I want it to. I wanted the item to accurately reference the source material, but I didn't want it to be so much of a reference in that it felt out of place among the other Isaac items, so I went with the simpler approach

@ChrisSor54 Ok so you already thought about all the possibilities haha, that's very nice.
Yeah, now that you put it that way, your approach is way better, very cool item, congrats!
Ps: Idk how hard or troublesome could it be buut... a costume would be cool, like, all black with a big Dark Sing on the forehead, something akin to the ringed knights maybe

Originally I had it where a heart was replaced by a broken heart, but when writing the description for EID, I realized that there felt like too many negatives to make an essentially free revive feel worth picking up, so I decided to remove the broken heart and just make it take a heart instead. Plus I think this can open the way to more crazy synergies, which I find fun, and only way this would become truly broken is if the player had a way to get unlimited heart containers, which at that point the run is basically won anyway. Also, I'd actually argue this is most like how DS2 implemented the health decrease, as your max health is incrementally lowered with each death.

Fun fact, for most of the development I also had it where your coins, bombs, and keys would be lost and had to be recovered with your body, but I felt like this over complicated things so I removed it. The code is all there and just commented out lol, so if you'd like to try it that way you can.

It would be cool and more balanced if you got a broken heart each time you revive. Also it would be like DS2 :D

@jenkins This ain't Reddit. Also I didn't look at the comment section before commenting, so both of us simply had the same idea.
