Interesting facts about Rutherford B. Hayes:

*Largely forgotten by the public today, Rutherford B. Hayes' presidency began with the most contested and controversial election in the history of the US (tied only by Donald Trump's 2020 coup attempt after his defeat in said election). The election between Hayes and Samuel J. Tilden was so close - both in the popular and electoral votes - that it took months of work, a senate committee, and backstage negotiations between Democrats and Republicans before Hayes was finally declared the winner.

*Hayes' presidency was - to put it mildly - not a smooth one, and was marred by two unfortunate decisions that are infamous among historians: Using federal troops to break up the first nationwide strike in US history, and for ending reconstruction efforts in the South following the end of the Civil War. To his credit, though, Hayes waited until governers requested federal aid before sending in troops to break up said strike, and he hoped that reforms would convince the South to move away from being racist pieces of cow dung. Unfortunately, the South immediately put Jim Crow laws into place that set back civil and voting rights for African Americans for decades. To this day, debates continue if Hayes should have kept federal troops in the South, or if doing so would have changed anything at all in the long run.

*On the positive side, Hayes' biggest achievement in office was his efforts to overhaul the government's policy of appointing officials to office based on party loyalty; Hayes worked to change this so that appointment was based on merit and skill instead. Though he was not able to complete this process while in office, his successor, Chester Arthur, would finish it in 1883, and the merit-based system remains in place today. Unfortunately, that system is currently under attack by Donald Trump, and only time will tell if it holds or if it is dismantled in favor of appointing political stooges into positions they have no qualifications for.

*Hayes was a very progressive individual for his time: he consistently advocated for the rights of African Americans, Native Americans, and Chinese people throughout his lifetime, including working as a lawyer who represented fugitive slaves before becoming president, vetoing numerous bills that would have all-but destroyed African American's rights to vote at all, and stopped the passage of a bill that would have banned Chinese people from immigrating to the US (unfortunately, such a bill was passed after he left office). Hayes also advocated for universal education for all children, addressing wealth inequality, and prison reform towards the end of his life after leaving office.

*Hayes is unique among US presidents in that he promised to serve only one term in office upon being elected, and did exactly that instead of seeking re-election.

*Despite being a US politician, Hayes is a national hero in Paraguay for his role in ending a territorial dispute with Argentina, and has a province, a national holiday, a postage stamp, and even a football club named after him.

*After a rather rowdy inaugural ball in the White House, Hayes' and his wife stopped serving alcohol at parties and social events during his term.

*Hayes had - without a doubt - the manliest facial hair of any US president.
