A-8 Hawk [RYTHENA] | Light Strike Aircraft

Description

The A-8 was created out of a need for a lightweight strike aircraft with range and stopping power somewhat comparable to the expensive heavyweight fighters of the Rythena Air Force while being easier to learn and operate than the F-16s fielded at the time. Despite its intended success, it would be largely overshadowed by French-built Mirages, the A-30, and Harrier, only receiving limited orders. The 1987 invasion of Democratic Republic of Sawyern seemed like the perfect opportunity to prove the A-8s worth, but they were instead mothballed, motivation coming from a lack of advanced systems and a dated airframe.

During the 1991 Conflict, all available aircraft were activated in hopes of preserving the country. The A-8 had received a GPS computer and improved radar targeting systems during its retirement, giving it the greenlight. It proved its worth intercepting small armored convoys, which gave command an idea. The A-8 was compared to the AV-10 for CAS. The A-8 was much faster than the AV-10 and could fly further, but could carry only a smaller payload with less accuracy. However, the AV-10 was vulnerable to SAM sites while the A-8 would, in theory, fare much better. As summer turned to fall, several squadrons of A-8s assaulted SAM sites along the path of a planned invasion. For the loss of two aircraft, eleven of the twelve sites were disabled. AV-10s and A-30s then advanced and cleaned out most resistance in a major portion of enemy territory.

Massive successes allowed Rythena to attack more countries and positions at once. The A-8 was the front line "silencer" tasked with destroying defenses. However, only 80 of the type had ever been built and expected to keep up with the larger numbers of attack planes and their sorties. Airframes, fighting fatigue of both mission and winter, grew increasingly out of repair. Hull losses by accidents reached 30 by late spring of 1992. The effort to create more was proving difficult as the engines were no longer being produced and all modernization upgrades had been on-the-side jury-rig jobs without proper documentation. Command forced the A-8 into retirement, leaving a massive gap in the SAM-clearing role. As a result, land offensives grew more costly without air support, slowing conquests and leaving aggressive peace terms out of the question. The 1991 conflict would end without many land gains.

With the 2001 Peacekeeping excursion into Arisian territory, F-225B fighters were played in a role similar to the A-8, but the sheer number of accidents pulled it out of service. The remaining 20 or so A-8s were reactivated after a major airframe overhaul, again silencing SAM sites. Free from strenuous sorties due to limited military action, A-8s enjoyed losses only to enemy units. Like the AV-10, it proved itself worthy as a reserve fighter with its AAM armament and SARH compatibility with great enjoyment coming from the newer generation of pilots. The excursion ended within two months with A-8s claiming 34 units destroyed and six aircraft lost.

The A-8 was permanently retired and slated for scrapping. However, the pilots flying fought to preserve their plane. The limited numbers had created a small-town-type feeling around the users as every loss was somebody everyone knew, while the survivors were old friends that seemed to be able to last forever. Six A-8s were made the acrobatic aircraft of the Strike Heritage Flying Corps, replacing their aged A-86 piston-prop fighter aircraft. 4 were gutted and made into museum pieces and ten were placed in federal storage.
