Convair F2Y Sea Dart

A to scale replica of the Convair F2Y Sea Dart that can land and take off in water.

The F2Y Sea Dart was an experimental Seaplane Fighter designed for the US Navy by Convair during the 1950's. At the time, supersonic aircraft were having trouble taking off and landing on Aircraft Carriers leading to the supersonic sea plane concept. The F2Y Sea Dart was designed to land and take off from water and fly supersonic speeds. The F2Y is the only seaplane that is capabled of supersonic speeds to this date. Despite this the aircraft wasn't very reliable and could only break the sound barrier while in a shallow dive this along with the US Navy finding other solutions to their supersonic jet problem ultimately led to the programs cancellation in 1957.
