Better Ideological Unions

Description
Better Ideological Unions - v. 1.0-beta3 (2025-07-18)

Goal of the mod

You think Ideological Unions are currently illogical, not useful and boring?
- The aim of this mod is to improve exactly that.

Content and Changes

dd

The Power Bloc Identitiy of Ideological Unions is now worth something.
  • Gaining new members now slightly strengthens cohesion.
Reasoning: After all, this is a community of like-minded people.
  • Power Bloc Leader now needs 25% less enactment time
  • Non-leaders now gain a 50% law enactment success bonus
All Power Bloc Members now gain:
  • 25% less radicals from dropping standard of living
  • 25% more loyalists from rising standard of living
  • -50 % revolution progress
  • -50 % secession progress
Reasoning: Even if the population suffers, they know in their hearts that they are doing it for a just cause.

The ideological orientation of a member state now has a greater impact on cohesion.

Various ideological decisions and events on the direction of the power bloc are now crucial for cohesion in the ideological union.

The ideological proximity of a country now generates leverage for ideological unions.
The focus here is on economic and human rights issues.

The Power Bloc Leader can force a regime change in any member state.
Depending on the relationship and the power of the nation in question, regime change can be peaceful with little international diplomatic repercussions or lead to a major conflict (the latter being a work in progress).

The target country gains two modifiers to represent the impact of the regime change

Positive Modifier for 5 years:
  • 20% success chance for imposed laws.
  • +5 approval of the interest groups in the government
  • +20 base legitimacy
Reasoning: The installed government is backed by the ideological union.

Negative Modifier with 5 year cool down:
  • -25% prestige
  • +50% radicals from dropping standard of living
  • -50% loyalists from rising standard of living
Reasoning: The population is critical of the new government.

A regime change now harmonises every (!) law with the laws of the power bloc leader.

A diplomatic process can now be initiated to establish a member state as a protectorate.
Depending on the size and power of the target country and the power bloc leader, this leads to more or less major international diplomatic entanglements.

A Kindred Spirit
If diplomatic relations with a power bloc member of your ideological union are good and close, it is possible to turn this country into a protectorate in a diplomatic process.
The proposal of a power bloc member to strengthen the diplomatic ties can be answered in three ways:
  • Start of the diplomatic process to establish a protectorate
(this may trigger an Anxious Resistance)
  • Guarantee of the sovereignty of the member state
  • Guarantee of the sovereignty of all member states
(For example, this increases the likelihood that other countries will accept an invitation to join the power bloc.)

Anxious Resistence
As part of the diplomatic establishment of a protectorate in the power bloc, other countries that are distrustful of the power bloc leader can trigger a debate within the power bloc. This debate can jeopardize the cohesion of the power bloc.

The ideological standard principals are now much more interesting and powerful.

For example:

Creative Legislature - Tier 3
  • +30% Political Movement Support
  • +30 Power Bloc Cohesion
All members gain:
  • -50% Chance of blocked law enactment
  • -50% political movement support for restoring or preserving laws
  • +1 law enactment setback

Ideological Truth - Tier 3
All members gain:
  • -50 popularity of agitators in opposition
  • -50% costs for promoting / suppressing of interest groups
  • +20% effectiveness for promoting / suppressing of interest groups
  • +30% Party whip impact
  • Member country legitimacy can't fall under 30

All Power Bloc Principles now have scaled effects.
So Tier 1 is already worthwhile, but an increase to Tier 3 is always interesting.

For example:

Foreign Investment is now scaled, giving a higher leverage bonus for economic dependence with every Tier.

Miscellaneous
  • Generals can be made the leader of an interest group under certain conditions. Since a leader with a particular ideology is needed to establish certain forms of government.

Updated v. 1.0-beta3 for game v. 1.9.7 (2025-07-18)
Please note:
  • Due to the new treaty mechanics, the "Guarante Independence" article is not automatically removed when beginning unification with a country. This article must be removed manually during treaty negotiations to avoid penalties to the integration process.
  • If a treaty containing the "Guarante Independence" clause is still in effect, forcing the annexation of a nation will count as a treaty violation and result in penalties. It's best to adjust the treaty accordingly beforehand.
  • Due to the new treaty system (and the resulting new bugs), unexpected errors may occur. Unfortunately, I haven’t been able to test every possible scenario yet.

Changes in v. 1.0-beta3 (2024-12-26)
Bug fixes:
  • The JEs "A Kindred Spirit" and "Anxious Debate" should now close correctly as invalid if the target nation becomes a subject by any other means. Thanks to lucocarvalho for the bug report! :)
  • Power Bloc Mandates are now calculated correctly gain. Thanks to Kelgran for the bug report and to Okan for testing! :)
  • Adjusted all principle modifiers to fit the new mechanics in 1.8.6 (e.g. promoting IGs becoming promoting movements)

I'm currently working on an update for the mod, but the new treaty system has made things a bit more complicated. Just a few more days! Thanks for your patience!

Hey SgtPeppersSoul! That sounds like a pretty annoying bug. Sorry you're having to deal with that. I’ve tried a few times, but haven’t been able to reproduce the error so far. It looks like this diplomatic action is stuck in some kind of loop – a bit strange, since the event should be triggered by pressing the button and only then. If you’re up for it, I’d kindly ask you to do the following: could you start a new topic under 'Discussions' and just paste your error log there? That way I might be able to see where the issue is. Also, if you could send me your savegame, I can take a look for the bug and maybe even fix your save. Is only this one savegame affected or does it happen if you start a new game? Cheers!

Starting the game with this mod active, I get spammed by dozens of empty versions of the regime_change.1 event. This seems to happen again every time I load a save.
