M4A1 Sherman

History

The Original M4 project was started in 1937 when the American MoD sent out specifications for modern medium tank armed with at least a 50mm gun and 1 Machinegun. Able to be produced with already existing factories and workers, and with the ability to be easily modified into several uses such as recovery vehicle and artillery tow vehicle. the USAO (United States Army Ordnance Department) tried their hand at designing such a vehicle, and after 2 years about half a dozen prototypes were produced. in 1941 the final design was narrowed down to a medium tank weighing just short of 40 tons, armed with a very potent for the time short 75mm gun, decent armour, and a great 5 crew layout with decent amount of internal hull space to move around and the mass production was started in several factories across the north of the US.
It had also incorporated a secret new technology. A single Axis Stabilizer for the elevation. No other tank actually had incorporated an actual gyroscopic stabilizer yet.

The biggest downsight of the design of the M4A1 is its lack of a coaxial machinegun, which could not be mounted due to the design of the mantlet and cramped interior space.
though it was able to mount a 30.calibre or a 50.calibre machinegun on a turret pintle mount. But it was often dismounted for height reasons seeing as the Tank was very tall already and the crews disliked the high profile as is.

By the outbreak of the war through the invasion of Alaska by Japan in early 1942 the Sherman had two main variants. The M4A1 presented here which was available in decent numbers and the fresh new M4A2 which had quite a few advancements over the A1 model.

During wartime service the M4A1 did its job fairly well, able to go easily against the present japanese light tanks. Though it did have limits with the cold of Alaska. The only source of heat in the A1 model was the engine itself which, as expected, made the crew incredibly uncomfortable to the point of carrying any kind of heater mounted inside the hullspace of the tank to keep them warm, before the military rolled out several upgrade kits to put purpose designed heaters inside the tank which gradually solved these issues. With time the A1 models were put more and more out of combat due to the availability of newer tanks. They usually were converted into backline support, sent to support other countries or as training tanks. Some were kept and modified by specialized units to carry things like flamethrowers and rockets, or as heavily armoured towing vehicles to act as heavily improvised armoured Recovery Vehicles.
