Description
The BR Class 89 is a prototype electric locomotive. Only one was built, in 1986, by British Rail Engineering Limited's Crewe Works. It was used on test-trains on both the West Coast and East Coast Main Lines. The locomotive was fitted with advanced power control systems and developed more than 6,000 bhp (4,500 kW). After being withdrawn in 1992, it was returned to service by GNER in 1996, before being again withdrawn in 2000 after major malfunctions. On 3 July 2024, 89001 was powered up on a live 25 kV supply in one of the test bays at Loughborough for auxiliary systems checks, then short distance movement tests were carried out on the test track. This was the first time that the locomotive had run under its own power on all six traction motors for around 25 years. Further testing of 89001 will be carried out to meet the requirements for running on the main line network under its own power.
