FYI, the standard ammunition loadout for US soldiers/marines would have been as follows (obviously less for troops without access to resupply):
M1 Garand: ~136 rounds (between 88 and 184 is common)
M1918A2 BAR: 180 rounds (9 magazines, plus 12 more for the assistant gunner)
M1 Carbine: 75 rounds (5 magazines, +100 rounds of loose ammo for re-loading mags)
M1A1 Thompson: 150-300 rounds (5-10 magazines)
The Japanese have a similar issue, from the little I played as them, but I would imagine they were probably short on supplies throughout the campaign, so in their case it might make more sense.
