The problem of lack of firepower needed a quick and cheap solution. A corvette modernisation programme Gladius-1 was soon launched, one of the results of which was the Gladius-3R. The length of the ship was increased by 1 block to increase resistance to critical damage. Also added onboard pylons to accommodate additional turret armament. The course armament was completely deprived of artillery, and instead of it 2 railguns were installed. The cockpit was replaced by a simplified version of the unified control module.
In the process of changes the ship gained only 30 tonnes in weight. The total number of produced units of all modifications made this project one of the most mass-produced. The Gladius was particularly popular because of its ease of operation and unpretentiousness. Experienced pilots preferred to use even more advanced versions of this ship instead of cruisers and frigates, especially in planetary operations.
