January 2nd, 1942. After the 132nd launched its offensive into the Foothills of Mount Austen, they were stopped short and held in check by the strongest Japanese defensive position on the island, a redoubt called “The Gifu”. Unable to push the Japanese out of this position, the 132nd’s commander sends the 2nd Battalion on a flanking movement to Hill 27 and to take the hill. There was no organized resistance. Upon reaching the top of the hill, the battalion ambushed and captured a 70mm Mountain Howitzer. The crew who was down in the ravine behind the hill quickly tried to race up the hill and recapture the gun but the 132nd cut them down. The Japanese then seeing the danger to the flank of their position at The Gifu, attempt to retake it by direct assault. The 8th Company of the 124th Infantry regiment launched six attacks on the night of January 3rd and all of them were beaten back before the Japanese were resigned to the fact that the hill could not be retaken. The fighting grew so fierce that the Americans began to run low on ammunition and Japanese rifle fire actually outpaced American rifle fire 10 to 1. During the daytime, neither the Americans or Japanese could occupy the hill itself due to artillery or aircraft so both sides stayed on the opposite slopes in the jungle line. At night the Americans would reclimb the hill in anticipation for infiltrations and assaults. During the fighting for Hill 27, the Americans of the 2nd Battalion, 132nd lost 27 men killed with their remains buried in a small cemetery with makeshift headstones just behind the hill. The Japanese in their six assaults lost about 100 men. One of them, named Manzo Yamada was killed just on the forward slope by rifle fire and his dogtag as well as his portrait was picked up by a medic from the 132nd. It is shown here with a present day photo of the spot where he was killed. On January the 7th, the 132nd was finally relieved by the newly arrived 25th Infantry Division. The final isolation and closure of The Gifu was about to begin.

April 1st, 2025 update: added new Japanese uniforms as well as reworked slightly US and Japanese uniforms. Added one Type 92 Battalion gun on Hill 27 that serves as the captured gun. Enjoy!
