Information for Travellers

The Steel system contains nine rocky worlds, two asteroid belts, and four gas giants.

The Steel system is part of the Metal Worlds. These worlds are designated Reserves currently closed to exploitation. The treaties signed with the Imperium at the end of the Forth Frontier War also designates the Metal Worlds as a demilitarised zone.

Steel is a member of the Sword Worlds Confederation.

The Steel system has no Starport. Starships must harvest fuel from the planet Steel’s oceans or from the gas giants.

The planet Steel is a Barren, Garden, meso world with a Thin atmosphere and a moderate amount of surface water.

The planet Steel was first surveyed by the Darrians sometime in the -1000s. It was colonised in 105 by a private company from Caladbolg. Steel was originally called Igliim.

When the War of the Second Rebellion broke out in 102 Igliim was left on its own. The colony renamed itself Steel. In 256 Steel began exploring the surrounding systems with plans to start its own colonies.

Steel found itself sandwiched between an expansionist Third Imperium and an equally expansionist Sword Worlds.

In 579 a deep space survey detected an asteroid swarm: the remnants of a rogue object that had entered the Steel system. Further study revealed that this swarm would cross the orbit of Steel, resulting in a number of impacts.

A multi-planetary evacuation effort was launched, with the majority of evacuees sent to Caladbolg where they eventually formed one of the 17 colonies. Others went to Sting. However, over a million sophonts will still on the planet, sheltering in deep bunkers, when a number of meteors struck the planet.

This killed the vast majority of the remaining population, with any survivors being evacuated over the following years.

The Steel system sits on the border with the Third Imperium. The system is occasionally visited by scouts from the Patrol. IISS starships also occasionally visit the system.

The Steel system has no Government and no laws as there is no population beyond the crews of starships passing through.

After hundreds of years the planet Steel’s environment has recovered. The planet is host to a rich biome of native and introduced organisms. Some of these organisms may pose a threat to visiting sophonts.

Steel has TL-0.

The simulation is currently stable, but that might change when running the simulation forward.
