January 7th, 1943. The 25th Infantry Division has arrived and relieved the battered 132nd Infantry Regiment after Hill 27 was safely in the hands of the Americans. The next phase of the Guadalcanal is set to begin with the reduction and elimination of the Japanese stronghold known as The Gifu. On January 12th the 27th Infantry Regiment is tasked with taking a hill complex occupied by the Japanese 228th Infantry Regiment that the Americans called “The Galloping Horse”. Over the next week the regiment is sent on frontal assaults against Japanese pillboxes and troop positions on yet more arbitrarily named and numbered hills and ridges. It was this battle that saw one Congressional Medal of Honor action on Simms Ridge or better known as Hill 53. This is also the battle that would inspire the novel “The Thin Red Line” written by James Jones in 1962 and was later turned into a motion picture in 1964 and 1998. The Galloping Horse and nearby “Sea Horse” hill complexes were named due to their shape on an overhead aerial map. One looked like a galloping horse and the other looked like a Sea Horse.
