Getting Started: Creating a map!

Step 1: Start the game and navigate on the main menu and select the Map Editor.

Take a moment to read the controls displayed on screen. You will notice that you are no longer firing your weapon and fighting zombies, but instead placing tiles, walls and objects to create a map.

Step 2: Press "M" on your keyboard to access the map editor menu. This is where you will save, load and publish maps.
Step 3: Go to the selection that says "Clear Map" and press enter to start with a blank map to create your map.

Step 4: Place some tiles, walls, and objects as you see fit. You can delete objects and walls by highlighting them using the mouse cursor and pressing the "Z" key. You can rotate the orientation of objects by scrolling up and down on your mouse wheel. Tiles are placed according to a grid and overwrite the already existing tiles.

Step 5: When you are satisfied with your creation press "M" to access the editor menu once again. Once the menu is open, you will want to save your map by selecting the save option, entering a map name, and confirming the save.

Congratulations! You have just created your first map. If you want to edit your map at a later time and make some changes simply load your map and save any changes you make.

Tip: You can play test your map by pressing the "X" key to start and stop the flow of zombies.

Tip: Your maps will automatically be saved to the Steam Cloud as well for storage, so you can access your maps from any computer.

NOTE: If you delete a map using the menu, it will also be deleted from the cloud storage!
Workshop: Publishing your map

Publishing your map will put your creation up on the community Workshop for other players to download and play! Publishing your map is done using the map editor menu.

ALWAYS SAVE YOUR MAP BEFORE PUBLISHING!

Step 1: Load the map you want to publish, or save any changes if you are already editing the map.

Step 2: Press "M" to access the map editor menu and highlight the option to publish to Workshop. Press and confirm the selection. Then await confirmation that your creation has been uploaded to the workshop.

NOTE: It can take anywhere from a few seconds to a few minutes for your creation to appear on the workshop.

Step 3: Once your creation has been uploaded to the workshop, open your browser and navigate to the Workshop section for the game: Over 9000 Zombies! Workshop

Here you can edit the maps Title and Description, as well as delete the map from the workshop. You can also upload additional images and generate links to share your content.

Congratulations, you have successfully published a map to the Workshop!

TIP: You can create a custom preview image for you map by changing the "preview.jpg" file in the games map directory. More details on this in the next section of the guide!
Updating Your Map
Sometimes you will want to release changes to your map without creating an entirely new workshop publication. This can be achieved by using the Update Workshop Map selection in the map editor menu.

ALWAYS SAVE YOUR MAP BEFORE PUBLISHING ANY CHANGES

Step 1: Load the map you want to update, and complete any changes, then save these changes.

Step 2: Select the Update Workshop Map item in the map editor menu (accessible in the map editor by pressing "M").

Step 3: A list will be generated of your existing publications. Select the appropriate workshop item you wish to update and wait for confirmation that your item has been updated.

Congratulations, you have successfully updated your map on Workshop!

How to Change the Preview Image: You can change the preview image for your workshop creation by changing the "preview.jpg" file located in the map folder of the game directory.
Navigate to the games local files by right clicking on the game in your Steam games list, and clicking "Properties". Then click "Browse Local Files" and open the folder named "Maps". In there you will find the "preview.jpg" file which you can change.

After you have made changes to the "preview.jpg" file, Update your existing Workshop item to have the new image be associated with your Workshop creation! This also works for a first time publication.

Downloading maps from Workshop

Downloading maps you have subscribed to is done automatically by the game. You will need to reboot your game for the maps to download.

Note: downloading maps may take a few moments depending on your internet connection speed, once they are finished downloading they will appear in the list when choosing a map.

Subscribing to a map: Simply navigate to the games Workshop: Over 9000 Zombies! Workshop and browse the list of maps. Once you find one that interests you, click on it and then click on "subscribe". That is all you have to do. Your maps will be downloaded the next time you start the game!

How to play a map over multiplayer: Maps are transferred automatically. Simply host a game and the map will be transferred to any one who joins!

@Libbitina , the file only matter when you do the upload to the workshop. Meaning for each map, you can replace that same image file. E.g. set the image for the first map, then upload it. Then change that same image, upload the 2nd map, etc.

I hope this helps clear it up a bit! :)

I only see one preview file in the whole of my maps folder - but I have added 3 maps to the workshop that I'd like to change the preview image for.... Guess I can't? :moonflower:
