JNR De963

Introduced in 1904 by Kobu Railway, this train is Japan's first electric train (not counting trams). They were 2-axle cars with a total length of just over 10 m. However, these trains were equipped with screw-type couplers and an integrated control function, allowing them to be coupled together as suburban trains, and were distinct from streetcars that operated as single cars. In 1906, Kobu Railway was nationalized and JNR took over their assets, they were classified as NiDe950, De960 and De963, depending on their configuration. With the introduction of their successor, the HoDe 1 (HoDe 6100/DeHa6250), they became surplus units, their electrical equipment was transfered to new cars, and were later sold to private railways by 1915. Currently, 1 of those units (Matsumoto Electric Railway's HaNiFu 1) is preserved and displayed in the Railway Museum in Saitama.
