A type of heavy cruiser built during the Empire's counterattack against the United States, designed to counter the Des Moines-class heavy cruisers built by the United States and to largely replace the old heavy cruisers that were already old or damaged in the Empire.
The design features of the Hotaka-class heavy cruiser include the installation of four triple-mounted 203 mm guns, which were originally designed to be installed on the Zao-class heavy cruisers. The ship is also equipped with a new high-power engine that can output nearly 190,000 horsepower, allowing the warship to speed at a high speed of 43 knots on the sea, which is faster than the speed of the destroyers equipped by the Empire in the early and middle stages of the Pacific War.
It is worth mentioning that the Hotaka-class is equipped with a part of experimental mechanisms, which allows it to operate in a relatively high automation state with relatively fewer members. This changed the old situation of poor environment caused by the small per capita space in the Japanese heavy cruisers. In fact, the Hotaka-class even became the type of heavy cruiser with the best living environment in the Imperial Navy for quite a long time.
Compared with the old cruisers, the Hotaka-type cruisers focused on strengthening its anti-aircraft defense performance, and a large number of anti-aircraft guns were installed on its deck and other parts of the hull. The most distinguishing point from the old cruisers is that in order to increase the speed, the bow waterline and freeboard of this type of ship have been designed to be narrowed to a large extent, so that a certain amount of resistance can be reduced during navigation.
However, due to the overly shallow draft designed to reduce resistance, the seaworthiness of this type of ship has been reduced. In bad weather and sea conditions, the sailing performance and speed of this type of ship are more affected than those of old heavy cruisers.
