September 27th, 1942 – After the victory at Edson’s Ridge, the Americans were looking for an opportunity to take advantage of the Japanese defeat and attempted to cross the Matanikau to chase after them as they moved west back to 17th Army lines. On the afternoon of September 26th, multiple attempts to cross the river at both the sandspit and a small bridge the Japanese had built called “The One Log Bridge” had failed. That night, the Marine leadership devised a new plan of attack. It was a three-pronged offensive that depended on the success of each part for it to be successful. The first element would see part of Puller’s battalion hold the line at the sand spit in a holding action. The second element would send the Raiders south to cross the One Long Bridge and the third element would call for an amphibious landing west of Point Cruz and they would link up with the Raiders and drive the Japanese back at the sand spit from the rear, trapping them between all three forces. The plan was a high-risk operation that unfortunately failed. When the marine landing craft approached the beach, the 124th Infantry Regiment and elements of the 4th Infantry Regiment withdrew from its positions near the beach and allowed the 1st Battalion, 7th Marine’s to land and climb Hill 84 before cutting them off and surrounding them. Unable to contact Puller or the raiders directly, and with the Japanese now attacking the hill from all sides, the Marines managed to use their white undershirts to spell out the word ‘Help’ and a passing SBD Dauntless from the Cactus Air force saw it and reported the message back to Puller. Puller then decided to withdraw his Marine’s and contacted the USS Monssen who he then requested to give them naval gunfire support as they evacuated the Marines from the beach by way of landing craft crewed by US naval and Coast Guard forces. The evacuation at Point Cruz comes to be known as “The Little Dunkirk”. In defeat however, there was also heroism. Coast Guard Signalman First class Douglas A. Munro was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor for his help in the defense of the evacuation after the Marine’s fell back to the beach. The Second Battle of the Matanikau would be the worst defeat suffered by the Americans on Guadalcanal, though the Marine’s of Puller’s Battalion would meet the 124th and 4th Infantry regiments again.
