Amtrak's new Airo trainsets expected to enter service in 2026 using dual-mode electric/diesel-electric Siemens ALC-42E locomotives with Siemens Venture passenger cars and a cab control car


Type B1: Six car set with an ALC-42E dual-mode electric/diesel-electric locomotive coupled with an auxiliary power vehicle providing electric power via pantograph which also serves as the business class car, a cafe car, 3 coach cars and a final coach cab control car. Intended for service on the Keystone, Pennsylvanian, Carolinian, Palmetto, Vermonter, and Downeaster.

Type B2: Eight car set with an ALC-42E dual-mode electric/diesel-electric locomotive coupled with an auxiliary power vehicle providing electric power via pantograph which also serves as the business class car, a cafe car, 5 coach cars and a final coach cab control car. Intended for service on the Northeast Regional continuing on diesel to Virginia without a locomotive change.

Type C: Six car set with an ALC-42E dual-mode electric/diesel-electric locomotive coupled with an auxiliary power vehicle providing electric power from a battery pack which also serves as the business class car, a cafe car, 3 coach cars and a final coach cab control car. Intended for service on the Empire connection, battery power is used through Penn station where diesel locomotives are forbidden.

Type D: Six car set with an ALC-42 diesel locomotive, a business class car, a cafe car, 3 coach cars, and a final coach cab control car.

Specifications:
Because the game has no concept of dual-mode locomotives the ALC-42E's performance assumes the locomotive is receiving electric power via catenary.
