Bloody Ridge [Mission]

September 13th, 1942. The 1st Marine Raider Battalion and 1st Parachute Battalion are placed on the western and eastern sides of the ridge facing south respectively. The ridge that the Marines would occupy consisted of three hills that were fortified by light defenses and named as Hill 80 in the south, Hill 123 beyond that and one unnamed hill beyond it. On September the 12th, the Japanese launch limited attacks that mostly amounted to skirmishing around the ridge but with little organized structure from Kawaguchi’s forces they decide to attack again the following night. On the night of September the 13th, The Kawaguchi Detachment attacks in force. What follows is a brutal moving battle along the south to north expanse of the ridge. The 1st and 3rd Battalions of the 124th Infantry Regiment attack on the western and eastern sides of the ridge and the 2nd Battalion 4th Infantry Regiment goes straight up the middle. By the end of the night, the Japanese had pushed the Raiders and Parachutists back to Hill 123 but in the end, Marine Artillery and Mortars had stopped the Japanese attack for the night. At daybreak, Cactus Air Force P-400’s began strafing the remnants of Kawaguchi’s three battalions and drove them back. The Marines would hold their positions around Hill 123 for the rest of the following day before being pulled back to the hill behind them.
