Kingdom Gone

Description
Backstory:
The previous ruler got complacent, a small slip-up in water management resulted in the king and his people having to flee the toxic waters. Can you do better and rebuild? Fix up the old fortress, send your workers out into the lands, survive the seasons.

About the map:
A different type of game-play is going to be necessary to establish a sustainable colony. Although there does appears to be plenty of fresh water, beware, it's an illusion. In fact there is a distinct lack of flowing clean water so you really have to make the best of what's available. Later in the game you'll discover some good water sources but they're going to need infrastructure to get the precious liquid to where you need it. In the mean time, don't waste any!

Due to the lack of flowing clean water, the harder your game settings, the harder it gets to survive. Droughts are not really your enemy other than the usual "don't run out of drinking water" story. However, badtides is where the danger really is. The longer they last, the longer they will hang around like a bad smell afterwards!

Map size: 150 x 150
Underground ruins: 4

Warnings:
- Hard mode will be a challenge as badtides get longer. You think you can just irrigate your way to safety? Good luck!
- Don't grow your population too fast.
- Beware what you demolish, sometimes you get more than what you bargained for...!

Tip:
A useful mod to include (but is not required) in your play-through is going to be "Staircase" by KnatteAnka. The spiral staircase is useful for those tight corners.

Final thoughts:
I've tried to create something different with this map, hope you enjoy it, your feedback is welcome.

@Mikxy Thanks! I'm glad to hear you're enjoying the challenge. The flow during normal/badtide should be the same in theory since the game doesn't offer independent controls to mapmakers.
To get started in hard mode (it is possible to win) my advice would be to really focus on collecting water from the back of the castle. You can't have too many pumps! Also, ignore the water source in the middle of the castle, the flow is so small it is basically useless.
Next, create irrigation behind (left and right) of the district center, with water dumps. Beware of the toxic areas during badtides!
Keep your population small to minimise water and food requirements. You can grow your population later, once you're able to get out of the castle.
The river source has plenty of fresh water flow but you'll need to do work to make it accessible and useful to the rest of the map. All other water nodes (except for the large round tower) are more of an obstruction than anything else.
Good luck!

thnaks you for this map,
but yeah badtides are so difficult to manage in hard mode.

@Spooky_Paw indeed it does, it is just eye candy and useless for anything else. During badtide, it actually becomes a nuisance so beware ,)

the water in the middle is pretty much gone by the first drought... shame. i liked the map otherwise

Well, i kinda finished playing this map. Kinda because the game is open ended, so anyone chooses their own definition of when to finish it.

It was an interesting map, with interesting features. My beavers are happy and have plenty of food, water and resources to go by, and have bots as well.

And i played in hard mode on this map. Have to say, i fell for the illusion too. On the second drought in the beginning, half of my beavers died of thirst. I managed to recover and never looked back.

You can check out my sort of grand finale with the Wonder here: https://youtu.be/DRX2joedrLU

On to the next map.
