History
In June of 1942, in conjunction with the Battle of Midway, Japanese forces would move to invade the American Aleutian Islands off the coast of Alaska. At the time, the US was using the territory as a route for supply ships. So, Japan believed that cutting those off would slow the Allied effort in the Pacific and draw important resources away to focus on the recapture of the Aleutians. Additionally, American officials feared that the islands would be used as a jumping-off point to launch attacks at cities along the west coast of the United States. As such, planning went underway to retake the islands of Kiska and Attu.

The Battle of Attu began on May 11, 1943, with US forces landing along the southern and northern coasts of the island. Stiff resistance was met in the interior of Attu, as the Japanese Army had dug in along the mountains. Then on May 29, after being cornered near Chichagof Harbor, a final banzai charge would be launched to try to break through American defenses. However, almost all the remaining Japanese soldiers on Attu would be killed, effectively ending the battle by May 30.

The hostile landscape, fog, and arctic weather would prove to be a major issue for both belligerents, with many casualties and accidents caused by these issues.

Despite being the only land battle to occur on US soil during World War 2, the Aleutian Islands Campaign is often called the "Forgotten Battle".

Developer Notes
Hey there! Thanks for checking out my first-ever upload to the Steam Workshop! I've always thought about dabbling into creating custom content for RF, but each time I would open the level editor or download Unity, I would let out a massive groan and give up. Thankful, I've had a lot of free time on my hands to actually try and attempt something!

For a while now, I've wanted to see someone try and represent this battle, so I could use it for my Pacific War config. But since no one has stepped up and done it yet, I thought I would do it myself and make my own rendition of Attu! I always hear modders say that if something you want doesn't already exist, and no one else wants to make it, YOU should try to create it and do it to your liking.

If you think this first upload is a bit overproduced, it's kinda because I wanted to use this as a test to learn what goes into making a map, adding interesting level design, and uploading to the workshop. Overall, I had fun making and playtesting this, even if there were some things that irked me (why isn't 3D grass or Kill Boxes a default feature of the editor Steel?!). In the end, I hope to eventually try and learn Blender and Unity so I can make my more ambitious ideas real. However, if that doesn't happen and this is my only upload then hey, I hope this map is somewhat good!

Sorry for all the yapping. Get out on the battlefield and have some fun! :D

@Zero_Name500 could you tell me what textures you used and where? cause I think the textures you used would be a good fit for a map I want to make, Thanks.

Also, credit to Nolberggg on Youtube. His 2 part series on the state of the RF workshop really inspired me to put a lot of effort in how I advertise my map and make it stand out!

@Redcase Dude, thanks for your comment! You were one of my main inspirations when it came to trying to give my map as much detail as possible. Although I certainly can't compete with you. You really dedicate a lot of time to pushing the editor to its absolute limits and creating some of the most visually interesting/high quality maps with it!

I might as well also shout out Galahad (Pacific Map Project), Urocyon (2nd LW Inspired), Spooks (Decay of an Empire), and Chorusfrucht, whose maps I frequently referenced when making mine!

And thank you to everyone who has played this map, favourited it, added it to their collections, and especially commented! It's been awesome watching this blow up!

Stay amazing RF community! :steamhappy:

16 changes from the creating of map just 6 days ago? Man you really care about this! Its an encouraging level of effort. Good luck! I think you will make more great maps if won't give up. On my experience, that's a very successful upload for a first one and moreover - a map made with in-game editor. Good job

actually freaking amazing. especially making repeated low altitude sweeps through the valley in a prop plane. i got 28 air-to-ground and two dogfight kills with one plane. also fun as a ground unit. incredibly well done
